Okay, some of these web apps are fantastic. Add the fact that Chrome can pin sites to your Windows task bar? I've completely replaced some programs. |

Very cool. I'm on a laptop or desktop almost all the time... do you think it's worth my while getting a smaller device? I haven't gotten a smart phone for this reason. |

Google had a press conference where they outlined all the new **** coming to Chrome browser/OS, including the start of a Chrome OS pilot program in which they're sending out 60,000 test notebooks to the lucky testers. They also announced the Chrome Web Store, which is pretty nice. |

The biggest problem with the Chrome browser is that it flashes white between loading pages, and there is absolutely no way to disable this. It's really bad for viewing dark websites, or if you use an extension for dark colors. That said, I still use Chrome. |

Does chrome have a noscript type plugin yet? Because that's all that is preventing me from switching over. |

Do you need to disable all javascript, or do you not want to see ads? |

I don't trust most web sites these days. But, I suppose I could use chrome for sites I know are safe and load ones I don't know in Firefox instead. At the same time, ads suck. |

Might as well use Chrome for everything. It's more secure than any other browser. Just download the Adthwart extension and call it a day. |

Thanks Lex, forgot about that. It really bothers me that people completely disable Javascript. It can add so much to the web experience. It's a great language. Anyway, much like Coro said, Chrome has js filtering built-in. http://techie-buzz.com/browsers/disable ... hrome.html |

Javascript is fantastic, but it also opens up your computer to a world of hurt. The problem comes in when other things running through the site start trying to run Javascript. NoScript really opened my eyes to just how many scripts a website would try to run on my machine. The Glade had half a dozen different servers all trying to run various scripts - I was only interested in data from boardzero.com. When I visit a website, I'm interested in that site, and not all the other crap that's trying load. My default browsing state is for Javascript to be turned off, and then I allow through the Javascript that I want to see. It's a conscious decision every time I grant the exception, and it causes me to think about the risk. |

Javascript != Java. That is important. Also, many many very useful javascript libraries are hosted offsite - google and yahoo both publish good ones. |

Post subject: | Re: |
2nd everything Corolinth said. This is precisely the issue for me. I'm perfectly happy to enable javascript for (almost) all of the sites that I use with any regularity -- but only the scripts that originate on the site itself. In the last 12 months, I have twice encountered remote-execution vulns (at least one was aided and abetted by Acrobat...) that were "boot-strapped" by javascript injected into a trusted site by way of a rogue advertiser in otherwise trust-worthy ad server (AdSense). On one of those occasions, the attack succeeded without any user invention while using Chrome. This was shortly after I started "test-piloting" it in place of Firefox, so the filtering may have improved since then, but nothing beats a manual whitelist system. No matter how hard they try, Google (or anyone else) can't be as vigilant as I can. SuiNeko wrote: Also, many many very useful javascript libraries are hosted offsite - google and yahoo both publish good ones. This is true, but the solution is simply to allow javascript for the domains that host the Google Maps API, YouTube, jQuery, etc. Big, well-trusted javascript libraries like that are easy to carve out exceptions for. Noscript is really just a javascript firewall that makes it easy to create exemptions on the fly. NoScript doesn't support the idea that "all Javascript is bad" any more than a conventional firewall would support the idea that "all TCP/IP is bad". I would suspect that very few NoScript users are blocking all Javascript -- there really wouldn't be much point. In that case, you could just turn of Javascript entirely without the need for a 3rd-party add-on. |

If you want to block javascript from specific sites, look at the link I posted earlier in this thread. |
