Ok, so my wife and I are getting each other the new Kindles for Christmas (Wi-Fi version, I can load books on it from a hotspot just fine). Who has one? Any awesome tips and tricks?

I have already found the solution to one of my biggest concerns, getting docs and tech books on the thing without paying amazon to convert them. Mobipocket creator will convert a PDF, word doc, or text doc to the mobi (kindle) format, and it's free.

http://www.mobipocket.com/en/downloadsoft/productdetailscreator.asp

Any other awesome apps or resources people have found?

Or, you could get a nook, and just drag and drop .pdfs and docs from your computer.

Just saying.

True, but I've already overcome that hurdle. Also, the new kindle seems to be a bit better than the nook (at least, based on reviews).

I've owned the Kindle 2, NOOK, and Kindle 3. I don't like the design of the Sony Readers and the Kobo is butt-ugly. The Pandigital Novel is not bad looking, but I have the same problems with it that I have with the NOOKcolor (below).

Kindle 3 is def. my favorite. I like the design, I like the improved screen contrast, the stability of the device, the prices in the Amazon store, etc.

I did like my NOOK, but Amazon bested it. Also, I don't understand the NOOKcolor. Why not just get an iPad if you're wanting a color touchscreen reading device? The Kindle's single-mindedness of purpose is another plus for me. It does one thing, and it does it with better legibility and battery life than anything else out there.

Edit: Changed the stylization of NOOK. When did we go from "nook" to "NOOK," Barnes & Noble? Stop screaming at me.

Because the Nook is cheaper, can be rooted, and isn't attached to Apple or AT&T?

I understand the cheaper, wifi iPads aren't tied to AT&T, don't understand the problem with Apple, and reaaaaaaaaally don't understand the desire to root an e-reader. These things are made for a single purpose...they're not going to provide a comfortable tablet experience.

Plus, the NOOK's OS is buggy as hell. The Kindle just works.

The nook color isn't just an e-reader, it's a cheap android tablet that's locked into a specific use. Why one might prefer Android over iOS maybe would be best in another thread. I hope the benefits of Android above the nearly sole-use Kindle are already apparent.

Of course you don't understand the problem with Apple. Everything you work with is created by them. For those of us trying to mix technologies, Apple can cause headaches once in a while through lack of compatibility.

I still like the Kindle, but if this is true it makes me sad.

Spoiler:
Amazon has had a rocky history with censorship and apparent censorship. There was the time that they took a great number of books regarding homosexuality out of their sales ranking system, flagging them “Adult content” without regard to their actual sexual content (included were “children’s books, self-help books, non-fiction, and non-explicit fiction“). And there was the time that they caved to public pressure and stopped selling a book on pedophilia, while maintaining that despite their actions they did not condone censorship.

Now, Amazon.com appears to have pulled a number of self-published fictional erotica titles from its virtual shelves because they are incest-themed. Not only have they pulled them from sale, they have also deleted them from the Kindles of any user who purchased them. This has gone largely unnoticed, except, of course by the authors and readers of the books.

The biggest problem with this, if it is true, is that Amazon just finished a lawsuit last year where it agreed, in legally binding terms, that deletions would only occur because of “failed credit card transactions, judicial orders, malware, or the permission of the user.”

Writer Selena Kitt was notified that one of her books violated Amazon’s content guidelines, and when two subsequent works were also taken down with little explanation, she started to notice a pattern. She has found three other authors who have also recently experienced take downs of fictional incest-based stories; and, more disturbingly, her readers reported that their Kindle copies of the books, copies that they had paid for, were no longer available on their devices.

From Kitt’s blog post:

I want to be clear that while the subject of incest may not appeal to some, there is no underage contact in any of my work, and I make that either explicitly clear in all my stories or I state it up front in the book’s disclaimer. I don’t condone or support actual incest, just as someone who writes mysteries about serial killers wouldn’t condone killing. What I write is fiction. It’s fantasy, not reality. And I’m not saying what I write isn’t controversial, but it’s not illegal (at least in some states) or a threat to national security, and seems [undeserving] of censorship.
One of her readers called Amazon to inquire, and was actually chastised about her tasted in fiction by the representative.

Ars Technica points out that the bigger problem for Amazon is that, though they have a shown history of removing books based on objectionable content, they’ve already said, in a legally binding way, that they won’t remove already purchased Kindle books for the same reason.

Ultimately, this kind of thing is just one more reason why you should either buy a physical book, or, yes, pirate.

Thank you for verifying my 2 Kindle purchases, FS! :)

My wife's already arrived, I got it out to make sure it wasn't broken, and to set it up for our Wi-Fi (wanted her to have stuff on it to play with when we got it out of the box). The screen is very nice, much easier to read than I expected.

Vindicarre: That is very unfortunate, but it seems these battles are going on in every front, not just Amazon. I held off on buying an e-reader for a long time waiting for the DRM bullshit to play out, but this is obviously a battle that will continue for a long time (and my wife got tired of waiting).

What's the NOOKcolor's processor and RAM? I can't seem to find it on the BN site.

Hmm, not terrible. I assumed they'd just stuck a color touchscreen on the thing and called it a day. It's got more power than I thought, and may make a decent tablet.

I dunno, I broke my "MUST BUY NEW E-READER NAO" habit after the Kindle 3, so I've not really handled one except in the store display. The eight-hour battery life for a dedicated e-reader was a non-starter for me.

Yeah, the NOOKcolor is a terrible e-reader, but looks to be a decent Android iPad competitor -- except you have to root it for it to be so, because B&N isn't selling it as an iPad competitor, they're selling it as a dedicated e-reader.

The mind boggles.

I continue to hope that the idea was some hare-brained scheme to get the jump start in the color e-reader market and start beefing up color ebook titles, so that next year they can release a reflective color screen that I would actually buy.

Didn't you get an iPad?

Work bought one for me...I absolutely love the device, and the e-reader apps on it are nice, but I don't consider it an e-reader.

Been seriously considering getting an e-reader, and so far Kindle 3 has been getting the best reviews.

So the lack of touch screen and color isn't a big loss?

Go to your local barnes and noble and fondle the Nook to get an idea how good e-ink is. You don't need color to view black and white text, and as monochrome goes, e-ink is much much easier on the eyes than LCD.

I don't miss touch screen either. The Nook has a small touch pad on the bottom for navigating menus, but honestly, I think physical navigation and select buttons would have been preferential.

Hmm wonder if they would have them at Borders . . .

Last I heard, B&N bought out Borders.

No, Borders markets the Kobo.

Yea, I had forgotten about the Kobo... Either one works.

The idea is to handle one and spend enough time with it to appreciate the ergonomics....

Ah.

Well hell, no B&N's within 100 miles of my area. Glame.

Yup, I honestly wouldn't buy a color e-reader. It looks like a laptop, just read stuff on your laptop instead. If you want an e-ink reader (that looks like a book), I love the Kindle 3.

FYI: There are Kindles, Nooks and Sony Readers on display at all of my local Best Buys. Can't imagine this isn't a nationwide thing for them.

Regarding color - personal preference, but I would absolutely not want an LCD reader. Sort of defeats the purpose IMO.

Been a while since I checked up on this particular detail - Amazon still stuck on their proprietary ebook format?

What do you mean when you say it can be "rooted"?

Rooting = gaining root access.

Similar to "jailbreaking" an iPhone. It means bypassing the security "features" that restrict the user from using the device to its full capabilities by enabling the superuser account on the device.
