Sony's long-rumoured PlayStation Portable smartphone is set to be launched in North America and Europe as early as the spring, according to a Japanese newspaper report Wednesday.

The device would likely be based on Sony's handheld PSP Go game console, would be made by Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications and run Google's Android operating system, said the Asahi Shimbun's English edition, citing unnamed sources.

Sony hopes to take on Apple's iPhone, Research in Motion's BlackBerry and Nokia devices by offering the first smartphone that is based on a portable game console, with a set of controls that allows very advanced gaming.

The PSP Go, launched in November 2009, already features software downloads through a wireless connection, allowing players to also browse the Internet, watch movies, play music and read books and comics.

The new PlayStation handset would similarly work with Sony's online media platform, the company's answer to Apple's iTunes.

Sony hopes the phone will stimulate sales in the sluggish videogame console market, said the Asahi.

Sony called the newspaper report "speculation" and declined to comment.

Ok the article didn't mention this, but I'm guessing it'll be an awesome feature to play games against people while you're sitting on a bus or something.

My thoughts, exactly. I'm pulling for some other "WTF were they thinking!?" similarity. I'd kill for some more side-talking ridicule, especially if I'm blessed enough to get to direct it at Sony...

Hey, at least unlike the ngage with it's unchangeable cartridges (without turning your phone off), you know this one will be all digital downloads.

Still, can't imagine how this won't be a pile of crap.

Yay for complete and hilarious policy turnarounds prompted by being completely blindsided by market trends!

Ya know, that was my first thought as well, until one thing occured to me...

It's using the same OS as my Droid...and my Droid has absolutely rocked for gaming, between my NES/SNES/Genesis/PSX emulators.

So even if this turns out to be nothing more than a Droid type phone with control sticks...I'll be all over it, even if just to play my emulators on.

Yeah, but you just know sony is going to put a big old proprietary bloated crap sony interface on there. Once it's rooted, maybe :)

F phones and PSPGOs just focus on the damned PSP2!

The old PSP line is dead.
