Post subject:  Stupidly high ping

So, about a week or so ago, we started getting really bad ping for online games(Xbox live and my brother plays some silly league of champions or whatever). So, I check my speed over at speedtest.net and my speed is fine. Then I go over to pingtest.net, choose the LA server(closest one) and I'm getting 800+ ping. I try all of the other servers near here, I'm not getting over 100. I even try the Washington DC server and my ping doesn't reach 100. It's just to that one server. Any thoughts as to why this is? Is it something I can fix or is it maybe on my ISP's end? Or maybe the pingtest.net LA server is **** up or something?

EDIT:

I tried a server in spain, got 180. Then I go and try Seattle and get over 800 again. Strange thing about this...the Host for the LA server and the Washington server appear to be the same. Maybe it has something to do with the host and this ping test isn't helping at all.

There's generally a couple of things to keep in mind with any networking situation that is not wholly contained in your area of control.
1) There's nothing you can do.
2) You'll probably never know.

Pingtest might be acting wonky, too.
I checked mine the other day, just for fun, and Pingtest reported total packet loss.

It is disheartening to read that other people are having the same exact problem I am having and that my ISP is doing nothing about it.

Also, it seems to be a time of day sort of thing. It goes pretty good really late at night(or early morning, if you will, around 2:30 amish) until about 3pm in the afternoon. I'll do another one during the peak hours when it is worst.

Interesting. I was expecting you to provide a traceroute from your host, instead you procured a reverse. You have a Verizon circuit in LA?
Anyway, the providers on that path are InterNAP, ATT, and Verizon. All of which are well-peered. The server you ran that test from is in the Dallas InterNAP facility.
