Post subject:  Retrogaming: Kingdom Hearts for PC? (emulators)

The PS3 is the first console I've ever owned, and I didn't get it for gaming. The particulary model I got (the slim) doesn't support PS2 games. Working PS2s are hard to find, harder yet to find games for them.

I understand there are quite a number of effective PS2 emulators for PC, and on reading about the "Kingdom Hearts" series of games, I sorta thought my kids might like them. Anybody have any experiencing emulating PS2 on PC or finding old game titles for them?

http://pcsx2.net/ is what you want. Lots of info in the forums, some games require specific settings. Kingdom Hearts is very popular and I'm pretty sure it's going to be 100% working.

The hardest part will be finding an .iso. My old sources aren't too great for that anymore.

Wasn't Kingdom Hearts on other platforms too (DS comes to mind)? If the PS emulator blows you might check out another platform's emulator.

I wish they'd remake them for Wii. My kids would be all over that...but from what I understand, there are various Kingdom Hearts games for different platforms, but each game is different. Worse yet, it's actually a series of games that requires several different obsolete platforms to get the whole thing...I'll settle for 1 & 2.

There are other games in the series on the DS, and possibly the PSP and Wii. I would hardly call the DS an obsolete platform. It's still relatively easy to find used games for the previous Nintendo handheld at video game stores.

PS2s are hard to find? They are still being sold new down here at around $99 IIRC, although I haven't really looked in a while.

Kingdom Hearts 1&2 are on IPT. ([FreeLeech] even.)

Question: What controllers work with the emulator? Can I ironically just plug in a 360 controller and let it go?

You can use a 360 controller with it. You can't just "let it go" as it requires configuration and button mapping, but controller support is built into the emulator. It's also possible to get PS3 controllers working on a PC, but it's a pain in the ***.

Wish I could offer more specifics but I haven't emulated much since I made that FF12 in 1080p thread.

Back before my pc got all **** up, I actually played through Kingdom Hearts on the emulator. I had to **** around with a lot of the settings to get it from lagging *** on certain parts, though. But I eventually got it working to about 58-60 fps which doesn't make a whole lot of sense because even at 30 fps, there would be no difference for the human eye, but the way everything works is that the NTSC PS2 games are set at 60 fps and anything lower gives lag. So at about 50 fps, the game slows down to the point of unplayability.

Taly you got me interested again and it turns out the emulator is pretty awesome now! Got FFX up and running in no time and plugins aren't a pain in the *** anymore. PSCX2 now allows changing settings pretty easily without restarting your game so it was super easy to get everything going again.

Looks better when it's not a cellphone picture, too :p

I'll take some real screenshots when I have time to play at home. Kingdom Hearts, too. I haven't done too much today on the account that it's hard to map dual analog controller inputs to a keyboard. I'm not even sure if my settings are playable yet, because I haven't bothered going any further than the menus. Knowing emulators, though, the fact that it even runs the game is a good start haha.

A PS2 controller with a usb dongle (if you can still find them) are a great investment for all your emulated gaming needs. barring that you can probably get by with an xbox 360 controller, especially if you have one lying around. If you are going to buy something special, i'd consider the PS2 controller and dongle. You can probably find a 3rd party dual shock clone on the cheap.

And the RF receiver for even wireless 360 controllers is relatively reasonably priced if you already have the controller.

I have a wired 360 controller, which are simply "plug and play."

Finally found out how to take screenshots in Windows without a print screen button.. Am I the only one that didn't know about the Snipping Tool? Haha.

Some new screenshots, 1440x900. FFX looks great minus some UI issues; haven't gotten past the tutorial of KH2 yet.

... and just for fun, another comparison shot. This is PS2 native res vs emulator upscaling

Wow. That's rather impressive, I must say. Especially the comparison pictures.

Post subject:

Yeah it's hard to realize how much better the games look without comparison shots, because we're so used to 360/PS3/PC at this point. That native resolution is the reason I refuse to play PS2 games on my PS3, because they aren't upscaled and they're stretched which makes them look like dog ****. That, plus the PS3 "smoothing" option just makes things more blurry. Ugh.

So much their essential design hasn't changed in three console generations /shrug.

I'd take a PS2 controller over a 360 any day...
