Exactly. Can you construct a cabinet that wasn't bought from Ikea, Steve?

Not to mention pews (which are not to be confused with pew-pew lasers).

I bet the iLaser would be super-user friendly pew-pewing, though.

SURPRISE! Carriers Didn't Know iMessage Was Coming Until Today's Keynote

Apple is basically screwing over all the wireless carriers by making their own messaging system. I'm pretty much ambivalent about this one. I'm fine with wireless carriers racking in tons of money for nothing (such as texting), since it goes to bettering their infrastructure.

No different than blackberry messenger really. And based on this:

If so, that's pretty amazing chutzpah on the part of Apple. iMessage will let any two iOS device users send texts to each other directly for free, without having to use SMS.

That is exactly what Blackberry messenger does, and that has not made SMS obsolete.

Not any different than any other instant messaging/chat system, is it?

You could already get chat apps, and it's not really SMS since you can't just text any mobile number.

Although it is very similar to other services, it is a much larger step towards the death of SMS.

Because among your friends, I think I was the only other person that had a BBerry. Locking a messaging system to owners of a single device/os will ensure that it doesn't take over for sms. Not everyone has, or even *wants* to have an iPhone. I know I'd sell it on ebay if I was given one.

Google voice is a better sms system ;)

You can still imagine that these messaging services can be linked. For example iPhone's new one and Blackberry's could be linked, and I'm sure Android would join too. SMS would die except for people with legacy phones.

I predict that SMS is going to be the "telnet" of phones.

And I can imagine a 3-way with scarlet johannsen and christina hendricks.

That'd be more likely to happen than Bberry, iOS and Android coming up with a unified messaging system that will replace SMS.

Not to mention that the carriers make a metric **** of money off of raping people for SMS fees.

We'll see. I think it's likely in the next 5 years, and I'm betting 2 or 3. I'm going to re-open this thread if it happens and say I told you so.

We need another IM platform like we need an extra hole in our heads. I have google talk/icq client for my phone, but that doesn't mean I never text anyone. Most of the people I text don't have smart phones.

I imagine the sell of this will be end user transparency - app routes via SMS for most users and iMessage for apple culties without user starting separate apps or selecting which protocol to use

Overall, there were like 7 or 8 people I would bb message. It was nice. But right now, I have a phone that can log in to IM, google talk, google voice and SMS, and I use SMS more than IM simply for battery preservation.

Tally and Müs are the only ones I ever Google Talk with, and my IM gets used more for work.
