I've got a samsung 50" tv, 1080p tv and I'm looking to finally get a blu-ray player for it.

Any favorites?

I've heard good things about the Samsung and Sony bluray players, but personally I have a PS3. Now that Netflix is going to be available on the PS3 out of the gate, coupled with the price cut to the system, that'd be the direction I'd take. Plus, you can game on it :)

PS3 seems like the most cost effecient solution.

In case you're curious, the reason the PS3 player is so good is because it can be updated. A lot of BR players don't have the ability to update firmware and thus become obsolete when BR reaches a new spec.

Go PS3.

I've had this same question, TheRiov, and each time I end up back at the PS3. My wife keeps wanting to go for the cheapest solution, but I'm not sure that's the way to go.

That's what I tell my wife, but ... how often do specs get updated?

Of course, both of our TVs are junky old LCDs, not full 1080p (I don't think). Not even sure if it's worth it for us, given how few movies and such we actually watch. Little Einsteins on VCR is just fine, for now. :)

The Blu-Ray spec itself has been stable for over a year (might even be 18 months), now. The only updates have been encryption key updates, which are supported by any current-spec players. There's no reason to favor the PS3 for that reason, anymore.

As such, the PS3 begins to look anemic due to its lack of RF or IR control support. Your universal remote won't work with it, which is a serious downside to me. The fact that the last few updates have been bricking enough PS3's that it's made a splash on the internet is also... dubious.

I really don't get why people keep insist on whinging about the PS3's lack of IR, IR sucks and bluetooth is far better and really if you're one of those people that cares about it to use on your $200 universal remote then instead of spending $20 on the nice bluetooth remote than doesn't have line of site restrictions spend that $20 on an IR adaptor for the PS3 instead.

And yes, the PS3 is still the way to go for a blu-ray player, it's the most future proof player out there., not to mention a game console on top of it all.

Kaffis, I understand the problems you find with the PS3, but you've committed the one action I find truly annoying in reviews. You've negatively critiqued one product without offering an alternative that works better, has better features, and/or does not display the same problems as the product you've given the negative review to. If not the PS3, then what?

Actually, I like the sub-$100 one, gonna go get one today. Won't be able to give a review, though; gonna keep it in the box until Christmas for the family.

I'm not a big fan of Insight, either, but I'm also not quite ready to pull the trigger on a gaming system. Maybe when the kids are older.
