Doesn't even look good compared to today's standards, much less where a new engine should be.

On further inspection, it seems like this is actually a pretty cool new engine. My original complaint was regarding the texture quality, which I now see isn't the point.

I'm still skeptical. How well will it handle things on that scale with fewer (or no) repeated elements? And what kind of storage footprint does that island have?

It'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

I noticed in the comparisons, there were no animations. I wonder how that will work?

Looks like I correctly identified the limitations, lol.

I'm not sure I buy the bit about animation, though. If you can manipulate a "chunk" of voxels by rotating or translating it, then you can work out how to animate it just fine and with the same articulation as a polygonal model with a skeleton.

But yeah, the requirement for tessellation and raw quantities of data (for storage) is pretty damning.

I don't really know how Notch would know. Advances in graphics clearly isn't where his expertise lies...

Looks interesting if it's a real thing. He's not giving a lot of details, but he said they developing the tech. Looking especially pretty isn't the goal, they want to make a tool they would sell to developers who would use it better.

I'm ambivalent about improved graphics, though. It'll take 10+ years to make an "atom" generated game? Will it cost more? If it took to long to use, dev's/publishers might not bite. I get used to better graphics so fast that it seems like a waste anyway.

The best graphics look exactly like real life. Yet I am not so amazed that I want to look out my window instead of at my computer. If graphics do become extremely realistic, it won't be like what a lot of people expect, to say the least.
