http://www.google.com/mobile/navigation New (beta, of course) from Google is the next generation of their mobile phone app Google Maps. This updated app takes the existing Google Maps functionality and adds turn-by-turn voice output navigation on top of it. It's only available for Android 2.0 devices, of which the Verizon Droid is the only current supported phone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGXK4jKN_jY --- It looks pretty nifty. I could've used it earlier this week when I was travelling for business. I have Telenav on my T-Mobile G1, but it kept crashing when I tried to load it. |

I take the tangentially-related opportunity to link one of my favorite xkcds. |

Just picked up a Droid today, and absolutely loving it. Beats the iPhone hands down IMO. So, toyed with the Google Maps thing on the way home, and was kinda blown away by that too. The Droid is very integrated with Google, and it works quite well. |

I'm an iPhone user coming up on my upgrade credit next summer. I'm not necessarily looking to switch providers, but I figure that by then, there may be an Android phone on AT&T. |

Apps wise, those are still coming, though there's a nice selection already. On a technical level though, the Droid is a beast. Bigger screen (slightly) with more than double the resolution, 550 mhz processor...just makes going through webpages pretty snazzy. And I do love the integration with Google. When starting the Droid up for the first time, you link it to or create a Google account. Then when adding contacts, if a name matches a google/gmail contact it'll pull that info and add it to the contact automatically if you want it...the voice recognition has been impressive (You can say an address, and it'll look it up, map it, give you turn by turn directions, etc), videos can run at DVD resolution (which is very sharp on a 3.7" screen). Admittingly my time with an iphone has been limited (Being on a different network, my experience has been with a co-worker who let me put her iphone through the paces to try out for a couple hours when I was considering getting one), but with the things it did that the droid also does, my droid just did them faster/smoother/etc. So far anyways. |
