Just got an e-mail from the Diaspora team asking for donations. If I remember correctly, they had a pretty intense amount of start up capital, but I guess that's been burned through.

Unfortunately, with google+ and facebook fighting over the social media space, I think diaspora's days may be done.

I would agree. I feel bad for 'em, but eventually you've got to put out a product. You can't have a social network without people. :)

Facebook is the 800lb gorilla in the marketplace, and Google+ is the only thing that has a shot of being anything even close to a competitor. And let's face it, that's because of the Google brand behind it. A nobody trying to climb up right now is going to get crushed.

If they'd launched prior to Google+, they might have had a shot. I think Google+ will have about the same effect on Facebook as Google Buzz had on Twitter, but its true effect will be to quash the attempted up-and-comers.

Google+ hasn't even really gotten their wheels turning, yet. Don't be so quick to write it off.

I think the reason Diaspora had so much interest at the time it was announced was that Facebook had nothing but bad press at the time, and people were searching for an alternative. Now, the alternative to facebook is Google Plus. So that need has been filled. I agree, I just don't think there's any room in the marketplace for a third player.

I like Google+. The only real problem I have with it is that nobody wants to use it. If I had more friends on there, it'd be fantabulous.
As far Diaspora goes, they didn't get their act together in time and they missed the boat.

This. At first I was writing off Google+, but from what I can tell it's here to stay even if adoption rates aren't fast. Google+ will become the focal point of your personalized Google account services, with an emphasis on social. I'm wondering if Google+ will become less 'Facebook-y', but I don't expect it to go away.

I could definitely see this, if only because I see it adding many more features so that "walls for you to post on" stops being the defining characteristic.

Heck, you could already make a pretty good argument that it's already usurped Picasa in Google's product lineup.

Wow I feel so privileged....I just got one of those emails begging for $25 from Diaspora.
Funny how this is the third email I've gotten from them...the first email several months ago when I signed up letting me know that my invitation would be out "soon," another email many months later on the day G+ debuted explaining why I still didn't have an invite, and today I get an email asking for $25 and I STILL don't have an invitation....as far as I'm concerned, any glimmer of credibility they had has been completely shot.

Also, if you can give any amount at all, we’ll be sure to get you an invitation to join us at joindiaspora.com right away. (Just to be clear, you’ll still get your invitation regardless. But if you make a gift, we’ll get it to you now, so you won’t have to wait any longer.)

The audacity is mind boggling.

I would definitely agree, though I didn't realize anyone actually used Picasa. :P

Lots of people I know use Picasa. I downloaded it, but don't really use it.

I use picasa and picasaweb every single day...

Part of it is that I can't stand using those 'image organizer' programs...I've never gotten on board with Picasa, iPhoto, Lightroom, et. al. I guess they're fine for free photo editing-y things. Personally, I find they're very laggy and I'm too set in my manual media management ways to be bothered to suss them out. :)

Signing up on it doesn't mean they are using it. For example, I'm automatically signed up for Google Documents since I have a Gmail account, but I look at it maybe once or twice a year.

When people register for Facebook for the first time, it's usually because someone they know is bringing them into it. With Google+ on the other hand, Google is telling them to.

Look, I understand that there's a difference between total registered users and total active users. Point is, Google+ is still growing faster than anyone expected it to and it's not going anywhere if the earnings report is to be believed.

Even if Google+ terribly terribly sucked, millions of people would still register just because Google is pointing them to it. Google is the #1 most trafficked site.

Quote:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Ilya Zhitomirskiy, one of four co-founders of social network Diaspora, died over the weekend at age 22.
Zhitomirskiy committed suicide, a source close to the company confirmed to CNNMoney.
Diaspora -- positioned as an open-source, decentralized alternative to Facebook -- came into public view last year. Zhitomirskiy and three other New York University students announced the project on April 24, 2010, seeking donations through microfunding site Kickstarter.

The founders surpassed their $10,000 fundraising goal in 12 days, and they raised a total of $200,000 from 6,500 donors in 39 days -- including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The Diaspora announcement was well-timed, as it launched while Facebook was dealing with bad press about its confusing privacy controls. Diaspora also raised money from high-profile venture capitalists including Fred Wilson.
Diaspora posted its source code in September 2010 and launched a commercial version of its network a few weeks later. But after that, the buzz began to fade.

A Diaspora blog post last month pleaded for more donations, but on October 19 the cofounders said "PayPal mysteriously and arbitrarily decided to freeze everyone's donations." PayPal later said it had released the funds.
Over the weekend, dozens of people commented on the news of Zhitomirskiy's death -- first reported by TechCrunch -- via a forum on startup incubator Y Combinator's site.

"Ilya was an incredible person," wrote one user. "His heart was truly driven by bringing about positive change in this world. Diaspora was only the beginning."

Very sad. :(

I wonder if the porn attack on FB has anything to do with this....the timing was...interesting.
