I want something with maps, cadence and heart rate. Garmin seem to be the only show in town but there must be something decent for the iphone or somesuch right? The garmin are expensive, and from what I hear, the map quality isnt great.

If you want HR, you're going to have to go Garmin. I don't think there are any HR straps that'll interface with an iPod.

I have a Forerunner 305 with a handlebar mount. I get cadence, HR, speed, etc and can link it all to connect.garmin.com.

Plus, I've heard the battery life on an iPod.Phone isn't all that great when running a cycling app. The GPS feature uses a lot of juice from what I understand.

Also, the iPhone isn't waterproof, hardened against falls/drops, and allows you to receive calls/texts on the road ;P

If you're on a ride, and your phone comes off your bars and hits the ground at 20mph, how much would it cost to replace it vs replacing a Garmin?

Granted, if you want maps, you're up in the $450 (or whatever that would be in shillings) range.

But you could get away with a 500 or the forerunner I linked above if you're not 100% needing of turn by turn navigation.

As a side note... OMG DO WANT!

But then I'd need a 500/800 as well. And 2k is a leeetle bit steep.

I used a Garmin Edge 500 when I was riding last summer. I loved it. I didn't have the power attachment (didn't see the need). I didn't use the route mapping feature much.

If you want real-time maps on the bike, the Edge 800 is your only real option.

When I was shopping it was getting iffy reviews and I didn't really need the real-time mapping. was more interested in logging my rides, which they all do really really well.

Here are some 'event's' i did last year.

Run of The Mill 5k Walk/Run (yes I suck)
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/39914665

Here is an afternoon ride i logged and uploaded.
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/41112092

If you click the 'player' button, it will show you your stats as the run/ride progressed.

This makes me feel old. On my big bike tour 20 years ago, I carried copies of maps with me. Oh, and had to ride uphill, both ways, in the snow.

Fascinating stuff, though. I had no clue.
