From cyberpowerpc, to see the exact system I ordered, load code 1CMD5G.

Thanks everyone that gave me advice on the different components. I weighed everyone's opinion that gave one. It was all very helpful, and partly thanks to you guys, and a helpful coupon code I managed to eliminate a lot of silly bells and whistles and pick out a system I'll be very happy with now and can upgrade in the future, but didn't break the bank on. When Darksiege initially recommended this site months ago I was thinking I'd have to spend $3000 to get a system with everything I wanted, but my final cost, including shipping, was $2253.

DE: I couldn't get anything but an error message when trying to load that code. :?:

Was the Silverstone PSU you selected modular? I bought a Corsair a while back that was modular, and I love it. I don't think I will ever buy anything but a modular in the future.

hmm

they're supposed to be good for a week, but if they changed component availability that might do it. Or the fact that I acutally placed the order might have taken it out of the system.

The one I selected was the "SilverStone ST1000 1000W ATX 80 Plus Active PFC Power Supply" on the website. I don't know if it was modular or not, or what a modular power supply is.

Modular power supplies have plugs built into the power supply, so you can remove unneeded extra power cables in your system.

Ahh. In that case, IIRC it is, from what I remember of the reviews.

A modular PSU has removable cables, so you only use what you need.

By the way, what's with all the fancy schamncy designs on power supplies, video cards and all kinds of other **** that goes... inside the computer. I know they have windows now and all, but can you really see that much? The first damn thing they wanted to talk about in PSU reviews was whether they like how it looks.

Like everything else, it's gotten blown way out of proportion.

I mean, take power supplies for instance. It's not a glamorous hardware item. Probably the 3rd most likely part to go out, but still, I've only had problems with a handful in my entire career (fans are the #1 most likely, followed by hard disks at a distant #2). I've made dirt cheap systems and I've made top of the line ones, and the power supplies in both are still in service. The fans in the things are what seem to go out most. I'm sure arguments can go on forever, but I've not seen any appreciable difference between the dirt cheap PSU's I've used to build systems and expensive ones. These days I just buy the middle priced unit of the group, based on the specs I need...just 'cause. And, really, computer hardware is pretty good, I don't remember the last time I've had a part go out except if there was a problem with a fan that I didn't catch and something over-heated.

Yet, crap gets gilded and badged, adding cost but no value. People go for that stuff, I guess.

Buy Monster cables! *

*(not!)

I hate to think what my wife would say if I ordered a computer with a case like that.

Much like people who dress up the engine of a car, I guess. The example I provided was just the first one that showed the PSU and cables in simplest form. My Corsair is very "plain". It's black.....and that's about it.

My case has a window, but I never look inside other than to check things, or clean it of dust.

Well, the system arrived... but not the monitor. That's still on backorder; in fact it seems it wasn't even backordered until the system was assembled and shipped. Probably won't see it till mid-late next week. *grumble*.

Also, they didn't do a good job wiring the case. It's supposed to ahve 6 hot-swap hard drive bays. Two of them are for SSDs or HDDs, the other 4 are only for 3.5" HDDs. Of course, they put the HDD in one of the damn SSD bays. I tried to swap it to another bay, but none of the other 4 bays are fully connected; 2 have power but no data cable, 2 have nothing at all. I can't easily swap the data cables around either because the lower ones go straight to the hard drive, and have different connectors than the bay connectors. I also can't tell which data cable goes to which hard drive and only 2 SATA ports are the 6 GB/s ones; the other 4 are 3 GB/s. Therefore, I can't easily unplug that one data cable to plug my one spare SATA cable that fits the other bays in its place because I might accidentally disconnect my SSD. Oh, and one of the SATA cables that goes direct to the drive has a bad clip and sits loose in the socket; I taped it down but it's sort of irritating.

Still, I can't complain too much. Everything is there. I just hate having ports and bays that don't work.

Monitor was shipped to me today, estimated arrival on the 19th... I am elated and furious at the same time.

Glad you finally got it man! I'm excited, I get to build a full system for my in-laws for Christmas, good to stay in practice. ;)
