So, as seen in my new TV thread, I have a new TV (along with a somewhat comically small entertainment center for it, but that'll be rectified after a while). The entertainment center was what we could find that supported the weight of the TV (without being nearly half the price of the TV itself. I've a client for whom I did some pro bono freelance work who does wood design, and I'm going to see about getting them to do a larger, more appropriate entertainment center.

But anyway.

In the short-term, I've found that the new entertainment center, by virtue of having a back on it (unlike the design of my old one), acts as a sound chamber. So the PS3 (which doubles as our Blu-ray player, particularly now as the new TV is 3D-capable) fans kick up, it's like a jet engine sitting below the screen. Now, I have one of the OG (original-gen, yo), inclusive-of-actual-PS2-hardware, George-Foreman-Grill-looking ****. So while it's still quieter than the Xbox, in 'normal' mode it's noticeable, and when the fans really kick in, it's distractingly loud.

I have no qualms about moving it (along with the 47" TV that previously resided in the den) up to the bedroom, and picking up one of the slick new-model PS3s (yay, no more Spider-Man font!), but my question is: will it help? Are the new PS3s really quieter? Anyone have any experiences with them?

If you play PS3 games, sure. ;)

If not, just get a blu-ray player.

Your old PS3 also doesn't have full audio bitstreaming support, new ones do! So if you care about that stuff the new PS3 has all of that covered.

Well It would help by virtue of the fact that the new PS3's don't run as hot so it would take longer for the console to get hot enough to kick into high speed fan mode and would cool off quicker when it did, but I believe when it's in that fan mode it's pretty much just as loud.

I had the same problem with my PS3 when I got a new entertainment center, and mine also has a solid back though it's opened on the side, what I ended up doing is buying a USB fan from newegg and plugging it into the PS3 and put it behind the console pointing it so it was blowing out the side and it never goes into the high speed fan mode anymore and that USB fan is quiet enough I don't hear it, so that could work in your situation, especially if you can cut a hole in the back for the fan to blow out of, and it would be much cheaper than buying a new PS3.

I'm not entirely sure what's more wrong about that video ...

The fact that those 4 guys still make me want to punch whoever put that show in the face until they die.

Or, more importantly ...

The fact that Ikea designs may not be "creative" but they are "functional" and "efficient" ...

I have yet to see a full episode of Big Bang Theory (because, again, getting me involved in new non-interactive entertainment is extremely difficult). But after seeing that short clip I was reminded at how much I hate and loathe laugh-tracks. Definitely one large knock against that show for me.

On the plus side, it's nice to see that Darlene's boyfriend still has a job.

Darlene is his current love interest on The Big Bang Theory from what I've been told.

Having not ever watched the show, I thought maybe there was some character on the show named Darlene and you were missing Numbuk's reference. But then I looked it up, and yep; there she is. Heh. That must be kind of a ****.

Here's another **** I just discovered:

Laura Ingalls from Little House on the Prarie? Darlene's sister.
