Brilliant. http://www.kogan.com/au/blog/new-intern ... r-7-tax/#g Quote: New Internet Explorer 7 Tax
Posted on 13 Jun 2012. Today at Kogan we've implemented the world's first "Internet Explorer 7 Tax". The new 6.8% tax comes into effect today on all products purchased from Kogan.com by anyone still insistent on using the antique browser. But don't worry, unlike other taxes, we're making it easy to get around this one with a simple upgrade away from IE7 . The way we've been able to keep our prices so low is by using technology to make our business efficient and streamlined. One of the things stopping that is our web team having to spend a lot of time making our new website look normal on IE7. This is an extremely old browser, so from today, anyone buying from the site who uses IE7 will be lumped with a 6.8% surcharge - that's 0.1% for each month IE7 has been on the market: This is what the IE7 tax will look like if you don't upgrade from the six-year-old browser. It’s not only costing us a huge amount, it’s affecting any business with an online presence, and costing the Internet economy millions. Customers who enter our site using Internet Explorer 7 can avoid the impost by simply downloading an up-to-date browser such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera or even a more recent version of Internet Explorer. Our helpful popup showing customers how to upgrade to a modern browser. Click to enlarge. As Internet citizens, we all have a responsibility to make the Internet a better place. By taking these measures, we are doing our bit. This will help us increase our efficiency, help keep prices for all smart shoppers down, and hopefully help eradicate the world of the pain in the rear that is IE7! So, what are you waiting for? Time to upgrade your browser! |

What about people who are still stuck on IE6? |

Uh, who cares? If you're in a situation where you're being forced to use IE6, like at work, then you probably shouldn't be shopping online. Edit - Or, are you asking if IE6 users also see the message? Likely, they probably use a <!--[if lte IE7]--> conditional. Edit two - Yup Code: <!--[if lt IE 7 ]>
<script src="//ajax.googlegleapis.com/ajax/libs/chrome-frame/1.0.3/CFInstall.min.js"></script> <script>window.attachEvent('onload',function(){CFInstall.check({mode:'overlay'})})</script> <![endif]--> |

Wow, it's really legit. I just tried it, and sure enough, the screen darkened (haltingly), and up came the notice about the IE tax. Guess I'll never buy anything from that site. I've ***** about upgrading before, of course. So, other than "Luddite", what do you call someone who's the opposite of "early adopter"?? |

Considering a browser that old puts your computer at risk, and newer versions of IE are free, I'd say you use whatever word is appropriate for a person who makes poor decisions. |

A couple divisions of the company I work for are still stuck on IE6/IE7 due to a plethora of very old, custom-written web-apps that do not run properly on IE8. The same issue that makes IE6 so bad (nonstandard code and 12 years of outdatedness) also makes it very slow to update those apps. Oh, it's being worked on. But they're never fast, and they have other priorities in their budget (like integrating other companies recently aquired, etc.) |

Again these people shouldn't be shopping online at work, unless it's a for work purchase. I can't imagine why that the revenue collected Would ecede any potential alienation this would bring. |

It costs them more to support IE7 than the revenue they generate from IE7 customers. |

Then they could just not support it. Seems like they are out to cause a stir. |

Of course they're trying to cause a stir, they want to raise awareness as well. |
