Gabe Newell Wants to Support Linux, Because Windows 8 is a 'Catastrophe'

Aww, Gabe Newell, you're just adorable.

This sounds like posturing to me.

I can't imagine how Linux could possibly be any more developer friendly for gaming than Windows will be.

Also, that article ... eh... what?

I had to double check to make sure I wasn't reading something from The Onion...

Gabe Newell also called the PS3 a disaster and how he's got Steam on it.

The only topics people should listen to him speak on include "Where not to eat" and "How to not release games on time".

Posturing? Sure. But it's driven by a legitimate concern, I'm sure. Linux won't be competing with his product.

I've tried really really hard to like Linux, honest.

I'm surprised when I find someone that hasn't tried Linux in some form these days.

Unfortunately, no one really continues to use it. Except weirdos that think it's superior in some way.

Poppycock, you love Android.

I use Linux every single day. For what it does, it's really superior (server platforms, firewalls, stuff like that...). In some cases, it's useful as a terminal platform..

But as an every day desktop, or especially as a gaming platform, i'm going to say it's nigh-on-useless...

I've not messed with Win8 enough to know what Gabe's issues are with it (something tells me he probably hasn't either).

Anyone installed Steam on a Win8 platform yet?

Even if there ends up being mass hate for Windows 8 all that means is that everyone will stay on Windows 7. Just like when Vista sucked and most people stayed on XP, there won't be some mass exodus from Windows. Herp to the derp, Mr. Newell.

Android is Android. Linux is the penguin thing. ;)

I think most of you have a gross misunderstanding of Linux and its capabilities. As for Gabe Newell's predictions, Steam support for Linux is a pretty huge thing: EA won't do it; Perfect World won't do it; and ...

I don't have a WinOS on this machine anymore, but that doesn't really stop me from playing the games I want to play.

If it's features: Linux beats OSX and Windows hands downs.

If it's ease of use based on previous experience and device exposure, Linux can lose, but some distributions simply make both major for-profit operating systems look bad, unintuitive, and useless. Conversely, Windows or OSX can make a lot of Linux products look arcane and unintelligible.

None of that really matters, though ...

Linux generally makes all the things you guys love from your gadgets possible, especially video streaming.

You want to use OSX? That's awesome.

You want to use Windows? That's fantastic.

You don't want to use Linux? No problems there.

Just don't bash it because you don't like it or did not like your experience with it. It's responsible for Aero and the last 10 years of OSX visual improvements. It's where framebuffer compositing and direct framebuffer rendering for your GUI and terminal spaces originated. It's where a larger number of the bells and whistles you wanted and got for your current desktop were hashed out and made production ready. And it's had a huge impact on the software market and device development that we all follow.

I don't think anyone really has a problem with Linux, just Newell's idiotic statements. He says some incredibly stupid **** and Valve should probably have someone less nutty as a public figurehead.

Windows 8 being bad means absolutely nothing to the desktop marketplace. It just means that the primary supported OS will remain Windows 7 just like XP was the primary supported OS over the shitstain that was Vista.

Quote:
I think Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space. I think we'll lose some of the top-tier PC/OEMs, who will exit the market. I think margins will be destroyed for a bunch of people.

It's just once again more inane garbage out of his mouth. It's not the first time he's said some wildly moronic crap that never ended up happening and sadly it probably won't be the last. Unfortunately he gets publicity because he's a figurehead at Valve. Crazies really don't need their crazy plastered all over the place.

I'm not really bashing it. I might make fun of those who treat it like it's the best thing since sliced bread, but mainly I'm just saying that personally I've tried to throw off the shakles of Gatesian oppression and failed repeatedly for whatever reason. I've never gotten it to work for me on a work-a-day basis the way windows does, so I don't understand the need to bother. My computing experience isn't broken enough by windows to bother fixing it.
