Any advice on best? Rosie doesn't want a kindle, but I'm happy to hear about them too.

Why doesn't she want a Kindle? Because they're so amazingly easy and useful? My fiance didn't want one either, until I replaced mine and gave it to her, and now (after blowing through A Song of Ice and Fire on it) she can't live without it.

Nook Touch, or SimpleTouch, or whatever they're calling it now.

It's perfectly sized, fits in my pocket, responsive, and easy on the eyes. The ergonomics are comfy, and it's held up ruggedly to carrying it around daily for over a year, now.

Kindles are awesome. You've got your pick of the baseline Kindle (super-light, fast, and a mere $80), or the Kindle Touch (not a fan of touchscreen e-ink readers, but it's still a nice device and it's only $100).

The only other competition would be Barnes & Noble's Nook, but I find Amazon's library to be cheaper and offer better deals and availability (as well as being a more generally awesome company with which to deal anyway). I know some here are fans of Sony's offering, but I've never warmed to it.

I love my Nook.

Credit where it's due, the new backlit Nook is pretty snazzy. Kindle's line is due for a refresh in the next couple of months, so I expect that functionality to be added into the next batch.

iPad Mini!

Yeah, I realize it's not an e-ink reader, just had to throw it in here.

The Nooks are quite nice, though. I really didn't like Sony's e-readers, personally.

Yeah, if you're interested in a tablet instead, I'd recommend the new iPad or the Google Nexus (depending on your OS preference). The new iPad's retina display is gorgeous (particularly for reading), and the 4x3 screen is preferable to most tablets' 16x9(ish). The Nexus has a very good screen, and is much lighter and cheaper.

As far as I know, I'm the only Sony Reader enthusiast in the hizzouse. Nook Simple Touch is my #2 choice. Kindle spent way too much time being a "proprietary format reader" for my tastes. By the time Amazon started making it more open, I'd already closed my mind.

She asks if anyone knows anything about the kobo?

Kindle is apparently an anti amazon deal. She works for a publisher...

Kobo's pretty much dead. They're ceasing production on their e-ink readers and focusing on their market and iOS/Android apps.

They've got a nifty service (very social and "goal-oriented") but I wouldn't jump into the e-reader market with them at this point.

Kindle for the win. There's nothing better.

I <3 my Kindle Keyboard with book light case. Built in 3g, long *** battery life. Backed by Amazon's Awesomeness.

Yeah, nothing better. IMO, the Nooks are a distant second.

Just to be clear, we are all talking about eInk display devices here, right?

Everyone but me.

I just wanted to stir up **** with my iPad mini comment.

But I do think a 7" iPad would make a very nice reading device.

I have several glass panel tablets with eReader apps, and like to use them for casual daytime reading. I don't however like to use them at night, before bedtime. That is where the eInk is so valuable. It doesn't stimulate the brain to think it's not bedtime yet . :P

I also prefer the nook for reading over the all glass tablets, because they are, at least for me,easier to hold and use for long periods. I like having the border around the edge. It gives more hand position options. The tablets, for me, need to be sitting on a desk or stand, or in a cover/case, which adds weight and bulk, neither of which are ideal for long reading sessions.

The only Nook's that are eInk are the Classic (2009) and the Simple Touch (2011), which uses eInk Pearl. The two newer models (Nook Color and Nook Tablet) are both LCD's.

I've not used the Simple Touch, but my classic is a great reading device.
