Desktop icons (and shortcuts pinned to the taskbar) are minimal - I launch a few things that way, but mostly I hit Ctrl+Esc and start typing the name of whatever I want to launch.

I'm assuming you use Alfred for the keystrokes/app launching, since I see the alfred icon in the system bar. I recently started using it on my macbook at work. Any pointers? And is it worth paying for the upgrade?

Alfred is neat because you can macro some automation into it after upgrading. That said, I don't use Alfred anymore and just use spotlight since it's had a few updates.
