So new New Hotness, Asus RT-AC66U, showed up a couple days ago. This replaces Old Faithful, Linksys WRT64G (loaded with DD-WRT), that got me through the last 4-5 years with almost zero issues until a couple months ago. I've attempted to replace Old Faithful three times for faster routers, but some feature or another invariably doesn't work. Two of the failed replacements kept dropping wifi and required reboots to get back to working order. This was a PITA because I usually had to go upstairs to do it. So thanks to Newegg's liberal RMA policy, I think I've arrived at a good product. I really want a way to stress-test this bad boy though. I'm specifically interested in testing wifi up-time since this has been my most common headache even before Old Faithful. I used LAN Speed Test last night but this solution only seems to report up/down rates (anywhere from 17 to 57Mb/s over 2.4 GHz); it does not tell me if there was any temporary loss of connectivity. I guess I can queue up a long-running TV show on Netflix and let it run but there's gotta be a better method. Does anybody have any advice on how I can properly do this? While I'm at it, I never messed with Old Faithful's QoS settings. The last few months we've been doing a lot more HD streaming and torrenting. Is it probably a good idea to read up more and tweak this stuff in New Hotness? New Hotness isn't supported by DD-WRT (yet) and I don't know if Asus software is any good for this. |

Oh, I thought this was going to be about a real router. Get somebody to run an iperf server instance. Beat the **** out of it. |

Let me know what you find out, I've been looking at picking up an 802.11ac router as well, want more wireless bandwidth! |
