I post this not to continue tooting the Phillies' horn, but simply because my above post from a few days ago was apparently prophetic: MLB.com article basically saying the same thing I did! Just thought it was a little... coincidentally fun. :p

Where the hell did Jose Bautista come from and how did he come to be the best hitter in MLB when being invisible until he hit 30 years old?

(Yes, I know he came from DR. I'm speaking figuratively.)

It started at the end of the 2009 season when Bautista finally got himself regular playing time and consistent at-bats. Given the new workload he had, he did some tinkering with his stance, and swing, and commented that he was really starting to see the ball out of the pitchers hand, and getting some good swings. In 2010 he continued with his adjustment, and got a full season of ABs, and earned himself a regular spot in the line-up. The Blue Jays were rewarded with a 54 HR season. I'm honestly not surprised at all at his continued success this year, he's finally comfortable at the plate, and getting regular ABs, and that's about 99% of hitting.

He was discussing this and the MLB TV crew did some analysis. He has made some fairly dramatic changes to his approach at the plate. Namely, he is starting his swing at the point where the pitcher is taking the ball out of the glove (his words). He has also added a fairly dramatic leg kick. He also said he is picking the ball up out of the pitchers hand much better, and has improved his pitch identification.

It all sounds very cliche to me. It's hard to figure out, even with all of the changes he's made, especially considering that almost the entirety of the rest of baseball is down offensively.

Steroids.

Yep. Someone out there has found a designer steroid that passes muster in the MLB screenings. (I seriously believe that)

Well, they screen for the masking agents. As far as I know, there is still no reliable test for HGH, right? They only thing they can do it test for stuff that goes along with it to counteract it or restore hormone levels or whatever.

Apparently they developed and implemented testing for it last year:

No they test. Its the reason we are about to enter a lost generation of HOF voting in an effort to keep the museum "pure". Ironically, their efforts will instead make it irrelevant to a generation of fans.

No, they don't test directly for HGH. I was under the impression that they still can't, but maybe that's changed. They do test for other stuff that they can detect - run-of-the-mill steroids, EPO, recreational substances. But I think if you're willing to live with Shriveled Willie, you can get away with HGH.

Looks like the big stumbling block is that they've only recently developed a urine test for it. Had to be done through blood samples before.

Actually, HGH makes your dick bigger, not smaller.

Today: 3-for-4, 2 homeruns, 4 RBIs, and a stolen base.

Hitting .364 (1st in MLB) with 18 (1st in MLB) home runs, 31 RBIs (5th or 6th in the AL), 37 runs scored (1st in MLB), and 5 stolen bases. (Okay, not so much wow-factor there, except he's a threat even if he's just on base.) That does seem an awfully big improvement for just "getting regular at bats."

PTI said he had like a 20% chance of repeating as HR leader last season.

Consolidating Foamy's excellent contribution to our ongoing baseball discussion:

http://gladerebooted.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=6376&p=146479#p146479

Any chance for an actual merge? There are so few of us here that if we could merge every single good single discussion into this thread over time, as they happen, each season would be very well represented here.
