Wow that match had everything except that ultimate thrill. Ooooof
To be fair, Ronaldo only mattered for that one cross (by and large). And that draw against the #4 Team in the World ... I'll take it. We gave up a little too much possession late, but we neutralized Ronaldo all game long.
Now our group is incredibly interesting.
If Portugal beats Ghana and we lose to Germany, we're sitting very pretty. Portugal needs to win by a minimum of 6 goals vs. Ghana to knock us out. Ghana's GD is -1, though. Which means they can very realistically put us out with a solid win over Portugal. We need to draw against Germany to make certain we advance.
Great mathematical result, terrible emotional letdown. I fear the latter is more consequential than the former.
With that said, the US and Germany find themselves in an interesting position in their upcoming head-to-head match: a tie advances both teams. I feel, given Klinsmann's German roots, both teams will likely crowd the defensive ends, playing not too lose. That's our best shot to advance.
A few thoughts on tonight's game:
1. Klinsmann had the US keep the high pressure on the throw in, so they were caught upfield more than they should have been in that situation, leading to Portugal's second goal.
2. Cameron was at fault for the first Portugal goal, but not the second. It was a perfect pass from Ronaldo, who was given all the time in the world to pick his spot, because the US was out of position after a terrible turnover by Micheal Bradley, to the only place where his guy could get a head on it. A World Class play created by a World Class playmaker.
3. I've seen people, elsewhere, calling for Bradley to be pulled. However he's both the best possession player and the best playmaker the USMNT has. Great first half. Bad second. He needs to be better for the US to advance, but more importantly, he needs to be on the pitch.
4. Dempsey's "dick-kick goal" would be the thing of American Sports Legend, if not for that ending.
In summary:
'MURICA!!!
