US out to a quick lead in the first minute with a beautiful run by Clint Dempsey. They should be up 2-0 after a squandered attempt by Jozy Altidore, who then blew out his hamstring and had to leave the game.

All in all a very encouraging start for the Red, White, and Blue.

Anyone else watching?

Watching, yes ...

Hopeful the American team makes it out of group play? More so today than I was a week ago ...

We have to pick up points against Ghana -- 3 for the win. Any other outcome means we're totally out of it. We need to tie Portugal, but a victory there just got more likely, since Pepe definitely isn't playing us and may not be playing Ghana.

I fully anticipate us losing to Germany.

Portugal may not be able to beat Ghana now; but we have to win ... we MUST beat Ghana for a wide variety of reasons, not the least of which is them putting out of the last 2.

Agreed. We have to pick up three against Ghana to get out of the group stage, and a combination of our inability to substitute effectively and Ghana's incredible pace on the wings may be our undoing; though Tim Howard is playing an incredible game.

Because we're mostly Americans, therefore most of us don't give a rats, until the US can prove it is going to do well.

Absolute world class header by Brooks to finish in the 85th minute for the US.

Historic win for the USMNT.

That was a very world class play by Brooks and a phenomenal amount of resilience from our boys. They picked that back up after a solid Ghana goal and some seriously momentum shifts.

I hope they are more aggressive against Portugual and Germany. They'll need to be.

Pepe's red card is particularly brutal. He is definitely out against us next week.

That'll help for sure but a few questions remain for me:

Will Jozy be back and at 100%?
Dempsey's nose is totally broken right?
Can Bradley stop being a non-factor and step it up?
Will Jones keep getting away with the, admittedly awesome, headbutts?
Beasley?

Maybe, maybe not. That needs more information.

It's broken; he should be playable by Sunday.

I saw Portugal's center midfielder is out with some groin injury for Sunday which bodes well.

Go America! Score some goal/point units! Beat... wait, who are we playing again?

What sport is this even? Oh, yeah, its that black and white ball one that middle schoolers play.

Yeah, go USA or something.

It happens to be the most popular spectator sport in the world and will have more unique viewers over the next month than the last 5 SuperBowls combined. Just because ties are possible and nil-nil games are possible doesn't mean it's boring. You just have to know what you're watching.

More than those things, I cannot stand the stalling, diving, fake injuries, etc... at the end of the match when a team has a lead.

It totally kills what should be an exciting finish to a competitive match.. instead, I just turn it off and stop caring..

No, its boring. I know what I'm watching, and Soccer, perhaps more than baseball (which is *really* **** boring) is a snoozefest.

The diving and the fact that the game can end in a scoreless draw just adds icing to the cake. Especially for a championship series. Play till someone wins you pansy *** drama queens. I watched the highlights for the AUS-NED (I think it was Netherlands? Whatever.) game. 2:33 of highlights, and all 3 goals scored. That's about enough for me. I couldn't imagine sitting through an hour and a half of 10 dudes jogging around half assedly kicking a ball and sometimes flopping to the ground like they were taken out by an expert marksman.

I'm sorry? Have you met me?

That's kind of what I do. Not my fault soccer is an awful sport and the entire world is stupid for liking it. You're just part of the entire world. I get that.

Arafys:

If baseball was such an awful sport, it wouldn't sell more tickets than your beloved NFL. If soccer was such an awful sport, it would be the most watched game in the world. And the NFL added provisions for draws and scoreless draws last season. Guess you'll stop watching, right? I mean, that November 24, 2013, Packers v. Vikings draw was just so boring.

They should have played until someone won, right, the little drama queens?

Incidentally, if you've been watching any UEFA and FIFA sanctioned matches, you'd know that flopping, diving, embellishing, and other such nonsense has been drawing progressively stiffer penalties over the last couple of years.
