I had hoped that the Bills would be better at drafting than they are at playing football. Seems to me that they are equally "teh suck" at both.

In the first round they took CJ Spiller. Spiller is an elite home-run running back, but on a team with about 15 true needs, half back wasn't one of them. Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson are both 1000 yard backs who bring very different things to the table, but have no one to block for them. Buffalo should have done what they did last year, and invested in the offensive line in the first and second round (Bryan Bulaga and Bruce Campbell would have been my preference at LT and RT respectively) to go with last years first two picks, guards Eric Wood and Andy Levitre, and 5 year veteran Geoff Hangartner at center. This group could have been one of the best offensive lines in the conference over the next few years. Instead I get to watch a log jam at running back get crushed in the backfield dealing with 8 and 9 man fronts daring Buffalo to pass, which they can't, because the quarterbacks don't have enough time to make the simplest 3 step drop or shotgun reads.

The second round selection was just as abysmal. Still having a huge need at both felt and right tackle, and with two projected first round available to them, the Bills over-reached by a full round or two and selected a NT by the name of Torell Troup, who is only noteworthy for his inability to push the pocket, to play behind Marcus Stroud as a backup... this pick was made even more infuriating by the fact that Terrence Cody was still on the board.

In the third round the Bills made what I considered to be their only quality pick in the first two days of the draft. DE Alex Carrington was a projected late first-early second round pick on many boards. This was a need pick for the Bills who had no one to play the 5 technique end in their new 3-4. Still, the Bills could have used that tackle I spoke about earlier and the Bills still had the option of selecting Bruce Campbell here.

In the fourth round Buffalo selected a big, slow wide receiver. Marcus Easley does have some big play ability, but it's mostly match-up based. I suppose with TO and Josh Reed having left town Chan Gailey needs a few people to catch passes in his spread offense, but I'm not sure how he expects Easley to make a difference, however, because it's impossible to throw passes after you've been sacked. It strikes me that this new regime seems to be trying to build a house from the roof down.

Round five. I think Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Brian Brohm got on a conference call with Gailey and reminded him that the team doesn't have any tackles. Gailey begrudgingly acquiesces, and selects one... but get this... he's **** Chinese... seriously... I feel like I'm at a Carrot Top show... it's just bad joke after bad joke here... I'm starting to think that Buffalo drafted Spiller because he punked off Ralph Wilson's mother, and the organization is trying to get him hurt. Starting Ed Wang will make sure of that.

Buffalo had two picks in the sixth round of the draft. Again they went with defensive need picks, attempting to address the stand-up rush linebacker on the back side of their 3-4. With both picks they decided to invest in converted undersized small-school defensive ends. The problem is that the first of the two, Arthur Moats, is far too small even to play a converted weak side linebacker. At an even 6'0", and weighing less than 250 lbs Moats is more physically suited to play outside linebacker in a 4-3, which Buffalo no longer runs, and even if they did Moats has no experience playing in. The second of the two, Danny Batten, was not even expected to be drafted. /golfclap

As in the sixth round, Buffalo again had two picks in the seventh and final round of the draft. With three quality quarterbacks with very manageable contracts already on the roster, Buffalo says "what the hell" and drafts Troy signal caller Levi Brown. Levi drew a whopping 2.9 out of 10 prospect rating from NFL scouts, and wasn't even invited to the Combine. Buffalo apparently consoles themselves with him not being very good, by remembering that he is unlikely to make the team in the first place. With their final pick in the draft, Buffalo selects right tackle Kyle Calloway out of Iowa. Calloway isn't the answer as a bookend to the Chinaman, as he projects to be a guard at the professional level. Being that this is the final round of the draft, this is acceptable, and is only Buffalo's second decent pick all weekend.

It is tough being a fan of Canada's team sometimes.

I think the waters of Lake Erie taint all football programs (Detroit, Buffalo and Cleveland).

Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.

I've always wondered about the offensive nature of "Chinaman" versus, say, Englishman. Other than the grammatical difference, is it because Chinaman has been used derogatorily in the past?

How about Oriental versus say, West African? Is that one just outmoded?

Englishman, Irishman, Frenchman, Chinaman...

It's all completely benign.

Red.
Skins.

You'd think that with their consistent terribad performance for years running, they'd be able to buckle down and work on building a team with the draft. But no.

I blame Snyder. His solution to the question "Why do we suck" is "Because we didn't spend enough money".
