...and the rule they had to create because of this play: NHL wrote: A misconduct penalty shall be assessed to: "Any player or goaltender who, after warning by the referee, persists in any course of conduct (including threatening or abusive language or gestures or similar actions) designed to incite an opponent into incurring a penalty." That's the only reason I can see why the ref called a penalty on Pronger who was only screening Kiprusoff when Richards blasted one by. Waved off the OT goal and forced a shootout which ended badly for the Flyers. I was at the game and the crowd was completely confused as to how an unsportsmanlike penalty could have possibly been called. |

Not that I saw it, but really, should one ever be surprised if Pronger takes an unsportsmanlike penalty? He's the dirtiest ******* in the league. Sure, he's not as much of an idiot as Avery, but Pronger is a blight on the game of hockey. I'd lost track of where he was, but I've hated him on every team he's ever played. |

Real hockey players are gentlemen, regardless of how physical they play. Players like Pronger and Avery show no respect for their fellow players, and by extension no respect for the game. |

Talya: OK, I'll give you that Pronger may be an A-hole and I base that on the few minutes of interviews I have seen him give. But, what I don't agree with is the likening of what he did to what Avery did. Avery was facing the goalie making a scene and was not paying attention to the play. Pronger was facing the play the whole time. Planted himself squarely in front of Kiprusoff and simply waved a hand once or twice to distract him. How is a simple hand wave any more of a distraction than having all 6' 6", 220 lbs of Prongs standing in front of the netminder. The play just wasn't the same, the intention wasn't the same and he doesn't deserve a penalty called just for the mere fact that he is Chris Pronger. Also, the ref didn't seem to call it until after the goal was scored, there were no warnings (per the rule) and he wasn't facing the goalkeeper (per the rule) |

Pronger and Avery are different kinds of assholes. Avery draws attention to himself and acts like a buffoon. Pronger is the more quiet, more dangerous kind of *******, who bides his time waiting for an opponent in a vulnerable position so he can intentionally end their career. Now, that doesn't mean the penalty was warranted, I didn't see the play. However, reputations do influence referees, even if they should not. Wayne Gretzky always played like an angel, so the one time in the playoffs semifinal he got his stick up in the air and accidentally clipped Doug Gilmour for several stitches, the referees didn't even investigate it. Gretzky should have had a four minute double minor and wouldn't have been on the ice for the Kings' eventual game winner (which he set up), but that's how it goes. Doesn't sound like a good call, though. |
