I've never really considered this but it popped into my head the other day while I was playing NCAA 12.

Say a play develops that is an option run. The QB gets the ball and scampers 12 or so yards ahead but laterals the ball to his trailing RB as he is about the get hit. The RB then takes off for 35 more yards to score/get a first down/whatever. How is the yardage divied up? Does the QB get 12 and the RB 35? Or does the RB get the whole 47 as he wound up with the ball at the end of the play?

I've never heard anyone discuss that or bring that up in all of the football I've ever watched.

Going by the text here, it looks like the play would be split up 12/35.

If a player runs past the line of scrimmage and laterals the ball, the first part of the play goes as rushing yardage for the original runner. The second part goes as rushing yardage for the player who received the lateral.
