http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/football/nfl/super-bowl-2012/02/02/nfl.goodell.teams.ap/index.html Quote: Goodell: NFL may move to 34 teams with LA franchise
Friday February 3, 2012 12:46AM INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Commissioner Roger Goodell says if the NFL puts a team in Los Angeles, it is probable the league would expand to 34 franchises. Appearing Thursday night on "Costas Live" on NBC Sports Network, Goodell said the league "doesn't want to move any of our teams." "We probably don't want to go to 33" teams by adding just one new club if a suitable stadium is built in the Los Angeles area, Goodell said. Instead, the league would consider adding two. An odd number of teams would pose scheduling problems, including at least one club being off each week, and would create one division with five teams. There has been speculation an LA stadium could house two NFL franchises, although Goodell did not address that with host Bob Costas. Goodell says there are several issues that must be solved in LA, particularly which of two current stadium proposals is best. He didn't suggest any timetable for returning to Southern California. Goodell talked about head injuries and said the NFL was helping other sports and the military through its research into concussions. "We're in a leadership position in sports. People look up to the National Football League," he said. "We do have a game that's rough. There are inherent risks playing it. But the second-highest incident of concussions is girls' soccer. So what we're learning about concussions in football is helping other sports. Not just every level of football, but every other sport. "Now the NFL is sharing our research with the Defense Department to help treat our military personnel in the field." Earlier in the program, Patriots owner Robert Kraft and several current and former players were asked about lawsuits against the league by ex-players who claim they weren't warned about or protected enough against brain trauma during their careers. The Associated Press published a story Thursday based on interviews with a dozen former players who have filed suits against the league. What emerged was, at best, a depiction of a culture of indifference on the part of the league and its teams toward concussions and other injuries. At worst, there was a strong sense of a willful disregard for players' well-being. "We have to protect our players," Kraft said. "The league is very strong in this area and I hope we are prolonging careers" with the NFL's concussion research." Added Colts center Jeff Saturday, a member of the players' union executive board: "The reality is we don't know what kind of damage it is doing long term. It's the biggest problem we face in the NFL now." |

LA could probably have ours. We might not even raise a stink this time *casts protection from Hopwin* |

They should bump to 36. Then, you realign the conferences to be 3 divisions of 6 teams each. Expand the season to 18 games, 2 bye weeks per team and voila! |

For many sports, over-expansion has almost always lead to an inevitable and necessary shrinking. It's actually the natural endpoint more often than not for any successful business in general. |

I think the NFL has a good amount of room for expansion. |

Rorinthas wrote: LA could probably have ours. We might not even raise a stink this time *casts protection from Hopwin* Since I live in LA and would have to be dealing with the traffic from this if they build a stadium downtown, I have to ask: Who's your team? "This time" implies a city that's been hosed before ... Cleveland? Guess that's right, if you're invoking Hopwin, although I always confuse Cincinnati and Cleveland, honestly. The Los Angeles Browns?? I dunno, I think there's way too much there for jokes about the ethnicity of our city (it's actually about 60% Latino, last I heard). I think they'd have to change the name. I've also heard rumors of the Panthers, or the Vikings. LA Vikings would be fun. I was a Vikings fan as a kid, because I loved the helmets. I mean, horns on their helmets? What more do you need? That article is the first I've heard anyone mention the possibility of two teams in one stadium. That would at least make it worthwhile to build. I just hope they don't build it downtown. |

Aethien: The Official opinion was vetted long before you heard it. I'm curious what the league structure will be with 34 teams. It clearly leads to 36. Discuss. |

How many teams have to fail in LA before they give it up? |

Yes Cleveland. They could change their name like they did when they became the Falcons. However I didn't concider the possible humorous connotations of keeping it. |

LA should have a team, but the fans really need to push for it. Washington DC could use a team. |

Müs wrote: That was a hilarious joke, what are you talking about? It's observational comedy. It's funny 'cause it's true. But that's okay. If my team can't win, at least I can root (successfully) for my division to win. So long as it's not the Cowboys. I'll swallow my pride and root for the Eagles or the Giants, but the Cowboys can go **** themselves (each other?) like a couple of Oscar-winners. Lose to everybody else, but beat the Champs twice in a season? I can live with that. Except, maddeningly, they've continued their streak of doing absolutely terrible, but not shitty enough to land themselves the pick position to rebuild aggressively. |

*head scratch* I thought the Vikings wanted to run away to LA? |

Hopwin wrote: *head scratch* I thought the Vikings wanted to run away to LA? At least three teams have been mentioned - Vikings, Chargers, Panthers ... maybe more, but I think those are the big three. The latest rumor - more of an exercise in free association, really - is that the owner of the Rams is bidding on the Dodgers so that he can move the Rams back to LA. Kind of an odd thought, and yes, there are NFL rules against owning both football and baseball teams (or maybe only in the same market?). And, I think the LA Times' Bill Dwyre was also kind of miffed by the interview: Quote: Goodell cited both stadium projects — Phil Anschutz's downtown and Ed Roski's City of Industry site (now Grand Crossing) — as having "a great deal of potential." He said the league wouldn't expand to 33 teams because of scheduling problems of that odd number but said 34 would be workable. That got 'em buzzing in the Southland. Nothing excites TV like a lead story about the NFL coming to L.A., even though we've danced with these guys so many times, over so many years, that our feet hurt. The next day, at a news conference, Goodell backpedaled. The NFL has no plans to expand, hasn't even talked about it, he said. Shocking. Jerked around again by the NFL. Makes me wonder if talk of 34 teams is a way to block expansion. |
