First for the franchise, obly the 22nd tine in over a century of Major League Baseball.

Of course, the Astros beat the Giants tonight. Perfection is fleeting.

Nice game, took him a lot of pitches to do it, though. Hope he didn't blow out his arm for the season.

Oh, wait, I'm a Dodger fan, maybe I do ...

But I have to say, I was really surprised that this was the first perfect game for the Giants. Would never have thought that, with their history.

And he tied Sandy Kofax for most strikeouts in a perfect game!

There is conversation about it being the single greatest pitching performance in MLB history, and while that lable is somewhat subjective, and terribly difficult to quantify, the fact that it's being bandied about certainly says something in and of itself.

My vote goes to this pitching line, however:

9 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 20 K, 122 PIT

This line belongs to Kerry Wood, who on Wednesday, May 18, 1998, threw what was at the time only the 3rd 20 strikeout game in the history of MLB, and pitched a one hitter in the process. This game was pitched against a Houston Astros team that won 102 games and went to the play-offs, boasting a line-up featuring Moises Alou who finished 3rd in MVP balloting, Jeff Bagwell who hit .304 with 34 HR and 111 RBI, Craig Biggio who finished 5th in MVP balloting hitting .325 with 210 hits and led the majors with 51 doubles, Derek Bell who had his finest season hitting .314 with 198 hits, 22 HR, and 108 RBI, and Carl Everett, Brad Ausmus, and Ricky Gutierez all in the prime of their young careers. And this was smack dab in the middle of the steroid era.

I would say that it very well was a singular event, and I would also like to express my apologies to Sandy Koufax and his fans for misspelling his name in my earlier post! :)
