I have an HP Photosmart Plus.

Ink is ****ing expensive.

I can't afford the 11 bucks or whatever apiece for a black cartridge and then 3 colored ones.

So I just got the black one and figured I could just print black and white photos.

Oh no....can't do that.

Apparently, B&W photos are not printed with black ink at all, but a combination of all the colored inks.

WTF!!!!!!

Welcome to inkjet. There's a reason they practically give the printers away.

Have you tried going into the printer options, and forcing it to B&W there?

I bought my mom a Photosmart somethingorother. After a year or two of hearing her complain about having to replace the ink cartridges, sometimes twice in the same month, I bought her a B&W laser printer. AFAIK she doesn't even use the color printer anymore. She only cares about printing b&w documents.

I'm just going to buy laser printers from now on. It's more expensive up front, but it's less hassle in the long run.

Yes, this is the route I've gone, too, Moo. I realized I virtually never use color, and B&W lasers are pretty affordable. Supplies for it are much cheaper, and the toner cartridges last for-frickin-ever in comparison, to boot.

3 color starter refill kit is about $14, starter black is $11

And, I second the laser printer suggestion. I have a HP Color LaserJet 2600n and love it.

Yeah....the laser printer sounds like a good idea.
(BTW Kaffis...I couldn't find anything that forced it to print with just the black ink...there is a shortage of options with this printer.)
I just find it convenient to be able to print photos every now and then or other things that I might need for the kids' school stuff.

Ink jet cartridges tend to dry out without use pretty quickly too. :( I've found that in a roundabout fashion it's actually cheaper for me to print out stuff for school at home than to use the "free" $15/semester I get in printing on campus, just to avoid the ink drying up.

Nothing but hate for ink jets!

I love my b&w laser printer. Sometimes, it would be nice to be able to do color, but I tend to do those at work.
