I'd really like to get a stick, but my wife... not so much. She wants an automatic. The only thing I can think to do is to get the dealer to let us take out a stick for a bit before we order.

If she didn't feel comfortable with it she wouldn't drive it and I wouldn't do that... but I think she'd like a stick if she got a chance to play with it just a bit. This car is fun to drive and I think it'd be twice as fun with a stick.

What kind of car?

If its a sporty car, then yes, stick.

Anything else, automatic ;)

Or don't need the hassle. My last vehicle was a stick, and in town driving I hated it. I didn't *need* the control over the transmission, and Getting stuck in traffic was tedious. firrrrst.... second... first... stop firrrrsttt.... stop... etc.

This.

I can drive stick just fine. I learned how to drive on a stick. My first car was a stick. Now, when I shop for a car, guess what? It's automatic time, bay-bee. 'Cause it's less hassle, and contrary to popular belief (among stick drivers), driving a stick actually doesn't make you automatically superior to everyone else. News at 11.

I have enough **** to deal with when driving, I don't need a stick shift adding onto that. Automatic all the way.

Normally, I'd agree...I don't need the hassle of shifting, but...

The car is a Mustang GT Convertible. In addition to sitting in the garage and going out for road trips, it'll be my daily drive (if and when I ever need a daily drive... there's talk of being in the office more often, but it's not a mandate at this point).

I'd really like a stick in this car. I just want her to be happy too.

The point of the post is to solicit suggestions on how to talk my wife into changing her mind, not to agree with her.

She's got an auto in hers.

I prefer stick, but auto is so much more common I often buckle under.

Getting a Mustang in an automatic is an abomination. Especially with the V-8.

The stick in the new mustangs is pretty nice stock too, so no need for a shift kit, etc.

Nah, getting a real sports car like a Lamborghini or Porsche in auto would be an abomination.

Convertibles are built for cruisin ;) GT cars = Comfort

I own and drive stick, but I can really go either way.

What, why are you looking at me that way?

Because of your unintentional innuendo.

Automatic for the people, tbh.

Manual transmissions really don't offer any significant advantages for normal driving, and are just one more driving distraction that is not needed.

Automatics can be made pretty powerful nowadays, with good gas mileage.

I prefer a manual transmission. I just enjoy the driving more.

I'd explain to her why it's important to you to get stick in err... your car. It's probably a case of her not understanding why you'd want it.

Accentuate the practical side of it, tell her it's better in snow and rain. Offers more control etc. Offer to teach her and tell her it will be fun? Uhh, grab a rental to teach her on =)

When I was looking to buy my last car (3 years ago), having a stick was one of my requirements. The sales person didn't think my conviction was that strong for such a thing. At the time I was thinking of buying a honda civic, and he had one on the lot listed as a standard. Found out it was automatic. He figured, "Eh, he'll still buy it!"

*buzz* wrong.

At that point I had pretty much said, "Yeah thanks. See ya later." I could visibly tell he was in shock that my resolution was that unwavering. But, he did quickly point me to a Mazda 3. And after a quick test drive, I was sold.

The only.... ONLY times I dislike driving a standard:

1. Driving in heavy, gridlock, stop 'n' go traffic jams.
2. Driving in really bad snowy weather, uphill.
3. Driving in heavy, gridlock, stop 'n' go traffic jams in really bad snowy weather... uphill.

There's also driving long stretches on semi-congested highways that are moving just slow enough that you have to constantly swap between 4th and 5th and can never rest your foot off the clutch.

I love my stick shift!!! No ifs ands or buts! I love my stick shift!! :)

I have much better control, in any kind of driving situation, in my truck than I do when driving my hubby's automatic.

Get the stick and teach her to drive it. Everyone should know how to drive stick in case of an emergency.

I taught my daughter to drive on my stick shift Ram 1500, and wouldn't let her drive her mom's automatic until she could handle that. This was to preclude inevitable teenage whining of "but its haaaard... I don't want to... I can just drive mom's car..." Now that she can handle both she likes the stick better.
