I don't get why people go to ER....


We are completely full...no rooms, patients in the hall...

I have a chest pain, an ambulance, a guy who thinks his friends poisoned him, and a bowel obstruction. All good reasons to go to ER..

Then I get a woman with a pinky toe cramp that she has had for a month and all of a sudden it's too much to bear..

WTF?

Some people don't have anywhere else to go. I tried to get my son a check up with his doc, I got told it would be a month before I could make him an appointment.

It's never taken me more than a week for me to get into an appointment with my doctor, thankfully. Actual possibly serious things have never taken more than a day. My doctor's office is totally awesome though; never had to sit in the waiting room for more than twenty minutes before being called back either.

There have always been people in the ER that didn't need to be there in the few times I've been recently though, it's terrible.

Last time I had to go to ER (last month, straight over from my doctor's office, wheelchair and all ) I ended up being admitted for a couple days. We're not all flakes, Kirra.

But, yeah...I've seen some people in ER in the past that were definately not ER worthy!

It's just frustrating...when you are running from patient to patient to try and get everything done and charted and then you get a pinky toe pain...

I've smashed my toe into the wall before and never once thought to go to ER for dilaudid.


I was frustrated and ranting) some days the compassion wears thin with the expectations of patients.

You think it is bad now? Wait for PPACA to kick in and folks with no primary care physician will be using ERs for that function.

Yes, it will happen, as few of the lowest income people will understand what they need to do, but by gum we have guaranteed health care now.

Heh, I went to the ER last night because I'd already been to an Army doctor that morning for a scratched cornea and they completely screwed up the treatment...

It's almost worth the four hour wait just to see the doctor's face when you describe the "care" you get at Fort Meade...

Those "urgent care" places are filling a huge need. If I have a smashed toe, bronchitis, kid's got a rash, etc, I need to get it dealt with. I'm not waiting a week or a month to see the regular doctor. But I don't want to go to the ER and wait a week there, either.

I called my family doctor's office this morning and have an appointment to see him this evening.

What kind of doctor's office are ya'll calling that have a waiting list of a week or more for appointments?

Been to the ER a handful of times now, but each one required stitches. Last time some dude knocked out his two front teeth on my forehead while we were playing football. Dont remember how many stitches but I literally saw stars when it happened, just like the cartoons

Waste of everyones time though if it's not a real emergency.

Last time I went it was because I got hit in the throat with a desk (helping some guy move) and it became excruciating to swallow and my neck was swelling up. I was worried about swelling and breathing so I went to the ER.

After 5 hours of waiting I figured I was not going to die and went home.

EDIT: In case you guys were worried, I was correct. I did not die.

That really sucks but the reason there is 5 hours of waiting is because too many people use the ER as a primary care physician. You should be able to go to ER and be treated in an reasonable time. But, the process clogs down with people who use it for prescription refills, well child visits and...as we call it...the family plan (where 1 child has a cough and cold and "well, since we are here, can you check over my other 8 kids").

There are many legit reasons to go to ER, but too many people use it for non emergent reasons.

Last time I was in the ER they said my spinal injury (I had no more lumbar curve by this point) was a sore back from gardening and kept refusing to test for Lyme (they gave in, I had it), about the only thing they got right was my skin infection (DUH in one day it was an inch past the marker and the inner part was turning black).

I could have just gone in and told them what I needed, paid for it, and gone out in 1/10th the time with 3x better accuracy.

Hmm...ER docs are generalists.. They are trained to handle emergencies..they save your life, stabilize you, then you can go to the specialist that is better able to treat you.

I understand Lyme disease has debilitating consequences, but I don't know that I would consider it immediately life threatening. Please, don't think I am trying to downplay its impact chronically. You mention a spinal injury? Usually they do x-rays and CT scans to diagnose anyone that comes in with a spinal injury. If you come in with back pain and say you have fallen out of a tree, it is negligence not to do x-rays...if you come in and say you have chronic back pain..they probably won't do more x-rays but give you pain meds so that you can get through the night and make your appointment with the orthopedic doctor in the morning.

That's kinda why I think people expect too much, and are dissatisfied with their ER visits, they want exact diagnosis from doctors who are not specialists. Doctors are like any profession, each have seen different things in their career, some have seen Lyme disease, some have not and wouldn't recognize it. Just the luck of the draw as to which dr you get.

Ultimately, it's up to you to seek different opinions till you find an answer to your health problem.

Really, if you go to ER and they take care of the ABC's (airway, breathing and circulation) that is what they are trained to do and are specialist in. Other than that primary care and specialist drs would better serve non emergent problems.

But, this is just my opinion, based on working in the environment.

I don't have a uvula any more thanks to Army doctors.

My cousin had lyme disease too. He never went to an ER. Treatment for that is measured in years, to the best of my knowledge. He also lives in the same area as Elmo. Is the Philadelphia area known for lyme disease or something?

Me too, but if I read it correctly, as of now, with no more edits from Kirra or Arathain, it sounds like Kirra was NOT saying "That really sucks" to Arathain dieing. I think she was saying it to him waiting 5 hours for treatment at the ER.

My Aunt had it. We have a lot of white tail deer in this area, especially the over population at Valley Forge National Park. The water that runs through the park is also infected with lyme. Ticks in this area are very prevalent. Depending on winter, Like this year being so mild, many did not die off from cold and are coming back full force this year that is why I am afraid to take Sean outside near wooded areas.
