Okay, finding my daughter getting ready to break into her teens (god I'm old)....

I am finding that somewhere along the way I got lost. I understand stoner, I understand wigger, I understand punker, I understand preppy, I understand the longhairs, I understand the death metal crowd and I understand goth. And I even get the NY Hardcore scene.

I sort of understand metro.. but I may be off a bit.

But there are a few of these "types" and genre's that I seem to have missed the creation of. So in the interest of not being completely **** lost over the next 8 years.... help, please.

Where did the goth's go and who the hell let the emo's hang out at the big kids table? What the **** is straight edge?

and music... where did all these xxx-core things come from? I get hardcore.. I have been listening to bands like Biohazard since I was my daughters age, hell I can even understand grindcore but now we have screamcore, emocore, deathcore, metalcore and fashioncore(?).

I know some of the other gladers have been doing this whole "parents of (a) teenager(s)" for a while, and I am hoping that someone could enlighten me before I get even more uncool than I already have.

For the most part, these are phases, though wigger is one I've never heard of before, as well as anything including and after straight edge.

My tactic was to discuss the why of what she was listening to. She heard that Daniel Radcliffe liked punk music, so she wanted to listen to punk music. I asked Amdee what I should do. Her answer, which I used, was to introduce her to some of the best work in the punk genre, including of course The Ramones. By showing her what the heart and soul of punk was, she immediately picked up on the differences between true punk and wannabes.

She did have an unfortunate detour through her Good Charlotte phase and at 13 told me I had to take her to get a tattoo (hell no little girl, when you're 18 you can make that decision for yourself, but I'm not starting you on ink.)

So, really, ask Amdee. She knows the music better than most of us I'm willing to bet.

xxx-core is under the "Hardcore" Tab. Really, there's not a *lot* of difference in the genres.

They pretty much universally suck. Although, knowing Savanna, I could tell her R-Pattz said in an interview once that he listens to Happy Hardcore and quite enjoys it.

Straight Edge is Punk without the Recreational Substances.

I don't know anything about the music, but emo is the new Goth. Kids that think its cool to be depressed, to cut on themselves, and to be emotionally melodramatic about being sad/depressed. From what I understand though (I could be wrong) its already phasing out and now when someone whines kids are like "gah! You're so emo!" So now its more like an insult.
Straight-edge you may have to google...isn't that the movement among teens and young adults to not drink, smoke, curse, or engage in any sexual activity? There was a documentary on it a couple of years ago. If you hear someone calling someone else "straight-edged" it is more than likely the equivalent of calling someone a goody-two-shoes.

Not quite...they think that things like carving someone's initials into their ankle counts as a physical manifestation of their "deep emotional pain."

Problem here is this is for all variations techno; and does not cover the non-techno aspects of the music.... ex- Poison the Well is called Screamcore, The Black Dahlia murders is supposed to be metalcore, and neither of those two bands sound anything like that page...

Also on the hardcore tab... on Metalcore; selection two... it is Fear Factory T-1000. Which sounds different on the album than that site made it sound.... it also comes from the techno remix album they did called Remanufacture, and is not typical of their music. It was a remix of an Industrial Album.

oh.. coincidentally... my daughter has already been exposed to The Ramones, GBH, DRI, Sex Pistols and the Misfits.

She favorites are currently: Metro Station, Cradle of Filth, Flyleaf, Evanessence, Lady Gaga, Paramour, Katie Perry, Curly, Michael Jackson and Madonna.

Just looked it up, I am familiar with the phenomenon, but had never come across the term before. Seems to be a modern form of blackface, and about equally offensive.

I'm kind of worried about you guys. Another decade or two and we're due for a backstep into Rock opera, and I don't see it being pretty or good music.

From what I understand "Straight Edge" has nothing to do with music or sex, but is a decision to not use any type of drug or alcohol.

I have a friend who describes herself as Straight Edge, who listens to everything from Dave Koz to Rap to screamo to eletcronica to Korn, and she is most definately a citizen of Kinkytown.

Sort of, no prohibitions on sex that I am aware of and it is usually associated with more hardcore music like metal and punk (real punk, not emo punk).

I like Katie Perry, Michael Jackson, and Madonna. The others are meh or I don't like them much. But I simply love Lady Gaga. Don't ask me why. I think her music is edgy and innovative. I don't necessarily think she's a great singer, but I dig her music. To each their own I guess. Maybe the music is getting worse, but different people respond to different types of music. What makes great music, or great art for that matter, anyway?

Straight Edge has been around since I was in High School(first heard the term over 10 years ago). Simply means no alcohol or drugs. Sex/cursing are fine. Just no harmful substances.

Having to live under a label isn't an ideal thing, but it probably gives many kids who don't want to get involved with drugs or alcohol (includes smoking btw) an anchor to avoid peer pressure. No bad substances or related trouble without the mama's boy baggage that may otherwise come along with it. My best friend through school subscribed heavily to this, including the music and such, even to the point of getting a tattoo. I never bit into it directly myself, finding occasional drinks to not be a bad thing, but I can support the message. Then again, I've still never been drunk in my life, so perhaps it had a bigger effect on me than I think... :p Unless a bit wobbly once counts, anyway...

My kid listens to Dance Gavin Dance. I have no idea of the genre, but there's a lot of noise and it makes me feel old. Clearly he's being raised right.

I actually really like the fact that my daughter has not inhereted my music snobbity-ness. She will listen to country, electronic music, hip hop, industrial, classical, heavy metal, pop, black and death metal all in the same playlist.

I will readily admit that I have an intolerance to hip hop, country and most electronic music. And I have a preference for music that most people think suck just as much as the genre's that I hate.

Oh and because I feel the need to insult them... **** Weezer (I have a love-hate thing with their music).
