I did not do it immediately after. I tested 10 minutes before lunch and 45 minutes to an hour after lunch.

The thing that makes me sad...

Lisa and I went to Panda Express for lunch. I asked for the nutritional information.

Initially the chick behind the counter said it was not available, but the manager got it for me after I ordered... Had I seen this info prior to ordering.. I would have ordered differently.

I have to split the 3 entree meal into 3 meals or else I will be so over my calories today it is not funny.

Breakfast was about 250 calories, the portion of Panda Express I ate was approximately 940 calories.

The Sugar Free, Carb Free Rock Star I had was 20 calories.

And between breakfast and lunch... about 150g of carbs today. This includes any sugars in the various foods. (I do not know if that is a lot or not...)

This leaves me about 590 calories for dinner and snacks for the rest of the day.

I hope you and your doctor get this under control soon.

Actually... I went from having the shakes and feeling like I was on meth to calm and steady.

In retrospect; I think that 78 may have been a 178.

I know not to expect results immediately, I know it is going to be a large learning curve and that I am going to have to work hard at this to properly maintain myself and stay healthy. But I think it is finally hitting me. The fact that if I am not careful I could end up with Kidney failure, having limbs get gangrenous, amputations, blindness and possibly even death is **** scary.

I tried to stick to my diet today, I may have missed it by a few calories though. But my numbers were disheartening. I know I cannot be expected to have a drastic change, but I figured with the change in my diet would have made me a bit better than I have been.

You might want to do some reading on the Glycemic Index. its a measure of how foods affect your blood sugar by converting to sugar or otherwise affecting your blood sugar or insulin levels.

I will be prescribed Metformin the generic for Glucophage. The doctor called me today and said that they were calling the prescription in and that I needed to start the prescription tonight... but when I called the pharmacy.. they never received the call. And the office did not return my call.

I will be calling them unhappily tomorrow first thing AM.

They said my A1C (?) was at 11, and below 6 is non diabetic.

But since I have been monitoring for a few days now, I am already starting to see my blood glucose levels normalizing out, but a bit high.

11 is hugely high for the A1C, my doctor was pretty concerned when mine was 9.

Don't call them unhappily, go down there and get the damn prescription when the office opens, then head for the pharmacy.

11 is off scale high for most charts. My goal is 7, although my Dr. suggests 6 is better.

As your advice has yet to prove bad Micheal.. I will be doing just that, I will drop my midgets at their school bus stop and heading straight down from there.

They also have me going in on Friday morning to meet with the medical assistant to be given a blood glucose meter, and shown how to use it. I am debating just telling them I picked one up and just need a prescription for the strips. (those **** get expensive).

The machine I did get is coding required, so I may just take and use what they give me....as I know the machine that they hand me will be calibrated properly.

Take the free meter. It's good to have a spare, and even stash them in different places.

My Dr. gave me 3 meters just for asking. I keep one in my desk drawer at work, one at my condo, and one at the 'workshop'... just so I don't have an excuse to not measure.

The model he gave me is a Bayer Breeze 2. It uses cartridges instead of strips. I always feared contaminating the strips handling them. It's a bit bulky compared to some meters, but I like it.

for you guys; how long did it take for a combination of diet and meds to really kick in and show results? Am I potentially looking to 2 or 3 weeks before I see any results?

And I have been doing the following for breakfasts...

1 medium egg (70 calorie), 2 slices of light Sarah Lee Bread (80 calories for 2 slices, 19g of carb for 2 slices, 2 slices of John Morrell breakfast cut ham slices (1 serving, 80 calories). For some variety I will use a little mustard and make it into an egg sandwich with a single slice of american cheese.

I am thinking about possibly increasing to two eggs, but using only the egg whites, or buying the egg white substitutes.

Lunch, I am using the same bread and making a sammich. Ham or Roast Beef.

I bought a couple of bags of Almonds; I have some strawberries. And as an "oh ****" button I have a few things of OJ in the freezer with one bottle of Orange Juice in the fridge.

I also have some no sugar added Apple Sauce single serving as a portable "oh ****" button.

I also bought a digital scale, and I am measuring out my portions, to make it easier to keep track of my calories.

I have also found that a single serving of mayo is a lot more than I am willing to use on one sammich!

The diet is the important part, the meds can only help you if you're being good. Think of it like you're driving down the mountain, if you use the gearbox and brakes its an easy if slow trip. If you just jam on down full speed (bad diet) and try to use the brakes to save you at the last minute, that once easy turn may be more than the car can handle at 120 mph.

You seem to be doing good on your diet but stay away from white - bread, rice, and dairy, especially anything sweetened. Did you look up glycemic index and check on which foods give your blood sugar a nitro boost to the danger zone?

No sugar added doesn't mean no sugar. Apples and therefore applesauce have nutrition value, but are damn high in sugar as well.

Watch your salt intake as well. High blood pressure is a no go for diabetics as well. How much sodium in that ham? The American Cheese? dude any cheese has high sodium but that processed American junk is among the worst. (strong bias for good cheese, why bother with Kraft? - At least get Tillamook slices.)

You are doing good stuff DS, you are paying attention and getting your house in order. I'm proud of the you.

The meds don't work for everybody and there are side effects with some of them. Talk with your doctor about what side effects to watch for and keep in touch if any appear. Excessive exhaustion is a danger sign.

For some folks the diet helps them get it together quickly, but the A1C and eAG tests are for the long road problem. You won't get those down quickly, it will take months. Get your daily blood sugar in control, keep your blood pressure reasonable, and the A1C and eAG will follow. Think of how good you're going to feel when you're back under 225, then 200. That is where you are headed if you keep the diet up and get a lot more exercise than you're used to. Get an air horn and blast Mus when he isn't looking, he'll help you get that exercise by chasing you for a couple miles.

I have been looking for foods that claim to have a low glycemic index, I have found a few.

I have been slowly looking at that link you gave me for the index.

As far as the applesauce... yeah, I bought it and wanted to swear when I saw how much sugar was in it.. that is why it went from snack to oh **** button.

My sister in law has a family member who runs a store that carries an entire section of diabetic friendly foods and snacks. Including a lot of low carb/sugar/sodium stuff. We are going out to the store soon.

I have also been rather candid about the entire situation with the kids.

I have had them watch me do my blood tests, and explained what I was doing and how to do it.

I went online and looked at several of the signs you are crashing out, and warned the family to look for them happening in me; and to get me the OJ when they happen.

I definitely need to work on getting the sodium lower... I also need to work on the exercise.

Coincidentally... we are also looking forward to abusing the new condition to get out of things we really do not want to do...

"oh, I am sorry xxxx, we had to skip the baby shower... Don's blood Sugar was just out of control, so we had to get it back under wraps"

Do not bother with the dietetic candy and chocolate. Please skip that . . . it is just foul.

YMMV but probably not.

Simple sugars sneak in from the strangest places. Carrots are very high in sugar, surprised the hell out of me. The fiber in them is good though and helps ameliorate the sugar. Just skip the carrot juice if anyone offers it, you need the fiber.

When they give you the glucometer make sure it has controls that come with it, so you can check to make sure it is in control and the calibration is ok. You might want to see if they will allow you to see a Nutritionist also, sometime they will prescribe this and it is covered with your insurance.

I am proud of you too DS :) You are doing great!

Lancet disposal... What is the protocol? Drop the bugger right in the trash? I have a sharps container at home which i am using, do i bring it to work or just drop them in the trash at work?

11 means your average blood sugar over the past 3-4 months was about 270, which makes doctors panic.

When I was diagnosed three years ago, my doctor set up an appointment with a nutritionist. This is what she told me...

1) Don't drink the juice, eat the fruit! You need the fiber!

2) Half of your dinner plate should be vegetables and/or salad, 1/4 should be your protein (lean meats, chicken, fish), 1/4 should be your starches (corn, beans, brown rice, potatoes)

3) Salad dressing on the side...always! Lightly dip your salad into the dressing, rather than pour it all over.

4) Whole grains...breads, pasta, brown rice.

Keep up the good work DS! Things won't change overnight, it takes time. My A1C was 9 when I was first diagnosed. It was down to 7 at my next checkup four months later. It has consistantly been in the 5 to 5.1 range for the past two years, now.

if you feel cold, shivery, my guess would be a temp.. Feeling like a cold is coming on?

On a side note, if you do find you are getting sick..your glucose levels will be whacked..so more testing might be warranted. They seem to fluctuate more when you are sick.

Other than this freezing cold.. I feel fine. And I have been testing every couple of hours.

Also, if you have high blood pressure, your recent non abuse of diet will have been lowering it, at least a little. When my blood pressure is high I'm always warm. When my blood pressure drops closer to normal, I chill a lot easier. Consider adding a blood pressure cuff to your backpack of medical paraphernalia.

This may be a good thing, or it may be, as Kirra the nurse (not to be confused with the other medical professionals we have around) says, you may be coming down with something.

I had some issues with flashes of fever while adjusting to the meds. My initial schedule caused me some intestinal issues.

Make good notes about how you feel before and after meals, and before and after you take your meds. If you start noticing trends you should mention it to you Doctor.

I do not know how... but somehow; my blood pressure is spot on. The doctor wants to keep track to make sure it does not get too low when I get the diabetes under control.

Invest in a home blood pressure machine! The ~$50 is money well spent! My machine saved my life back in October! Five years ago my blood pressure was textbook perfect...four years ago my doctor prescribed hydrochlorothiazide...three years ago he added lisinopril. You never know when high blood pressure will strike, especially as a diabetic. Be prepared!

Growing up, my mother had high blood pressure. We got used to not adding salt to the foods we cooked. Un fortunately, most processed, canned, frozen and fast foods that we have all become accustomed to contain massive amounts of sodium. Start cooking from scratch. It takes a bit longer but is better for you in the long run. Use fresh vegetables, garlic, spices, lemon, and herbs instead of salt. Nip high blood pressure in the bud, before it takes over your life and your family's life!
