Cool on the new job Foamy. Congratulations. Given the situation with the economy right now, that is enough to make one break down and cry.

Yes, some good news in there, at least. But, holy crap, $14K ... I don't think I realized that they actually stole your identity, and not just some credit card numbers. That has now sunk in, and I wish I could help you beat the guy across the soles of his feet.

Shame that you have to do the detective work, though, ya know?

Bummer and Gratz Foamy.. I feel your pain...

I'm actually kind of surprised that the stores were willing to give you any information. It's been my experience that they won't talk to you unless you are law enforcement because of privacy concerns.

Last summer my car was broken into and a brand new orbital sander I had just purchased a few hours earlier was stolen out of the back, along with the receipt.

Assuming the thief would try to return it, I went to the store and told them what happened and asked if they could tell me if someone had returned this item. They were willing to tell me that indeed the sander had been returned (they scanned the barcode on the receipt when it came back in). Whoever was working customer service accepted some sob story about why they didn't want the money returned to the card it was purchased with, and gave them cash.

They had surveillance video of the transaction, but wouldn't discuss any details about it... not even the time, nothing. They insisted that they would only provide info to law enforcement.

Unfortunately in my case, the Seattle PD won't investigate anything they consider petty (> $600). I also lost a nice pair of prescription sunglasses and a GPS.

Wow, a new orbital sander, prescription glasses, and a GPS system is less than $600? Petty? Yeah, I'd say.

The value was determined by my insurance company. Those things all obviously cost more than that new, but the 'replacement' cost was under $600...

The GPS was a couple of years old. The sunglasses were expensive, but also a couple of years old. The orbital was $199 If I recall...

Reminder: this is a rant. I am not looking for commentary about laws or rights or anything else here.

I am pissed about this beyond belief. Not only has this bastard stolen my identity, he is stealing my life away. I have to spend time on the phone and doing paperwork, instead of with my 10 month old. I hate this person so much. Good for nothing piece of **** scum who doesn't feel he needs to have a job and wants to take from others and benefit from their hard work.

It is absolutely not fair that I have to now go through the amount of paperwork that I do to clear up my name and my credit. I have stellar credit and it takes one simple 2-day fell swoop for this garbage to throw that into disarray.

I shouldn't have to do so much work (made harder by the fact that I have to work during the day and can't reach the people I need to afterhours) to clear my credit. Now I have to prove everything to too many different entities so I don't owe for these accounts and to clear the inquiries and BS accounts from my credit report.

This is not fair. Something has to change. This should not happen to anyone. I would rather he broke into my house and stolen $15,000 worth of stuff from me, at least this way my credit isn't ruined and days (weeks, months) of my time isn't lost clearing up this disaster.

All I hope is that the detectives track this filth down. I want to look him in the eye, I want him to know what pain he has caused me. I want to laugh as he is led away to jail.

It's times like this that I wish my dad really did have connections to the mob.

My life is a mess right now and I need some relief from this. I hope they get him...I hope they get him.

:x :x :x :x :x

What are the charges for identity theft? What kind of jail time, etc?

Most likely relates to the amount stolen in the process.

The answer is not nearly enough. It should literally be life in prison, as the strongest deterrent.

That would be a good punishment. I think removal of finger/toenails with pliers for a year is also a good one.

I'd suggest a branding stamp of "Identity thief" on the forehead, so any picture they take to use on stolen cards will be obvious.
