I've read several studies that show that this is incorrect and that people are in fact waiting until they are older (in their 30s) to start having children. I know that I am one and I was 33 when our daughter was born and if things had worked right would still have been 30 when our first would have been born.

I'll see if I can find any of the articles to post.

I think Coro was speaking from a global/historical (perhaps even anthropological) perspective, rather than a modern western culture perspective, which is fairly narrow in scope.

If the schedule holds, we're planning on having a kid five years after we got married, putting me at 31 and Phe at 27. Might be earlier than that, but as of now, that's the plan.

If I went based entirely on historical perspective, I'd have to make allowances for different genders. Women typically started having kids in their early to mid teens, while men started later. (Had to have a means of income before you could buy a wife).

But yes, I am speaking from a broader perspective than what's currently hip in the United States.

FarSky:

I just breathed a sigh of relief for Phe. I initially misread your post as saying that you were planning on having five kids after you were married. The only thing I could think was "poor, poor woman, I wouldn't wish five straight years of pregnancy on anyone..." Thank goodness I reread your post before I pm'd you with my misbegotten fears.

Elmarnieh, I'm fairly sure FarSky is referring to himself and Pheona in that 'we'. I doubt the idea of procreating with your fuzzy red self has ever occurred to him.

I had no idea it would cross yours. Are't you going for the voluntary nonfatal version of the Darwin's Award by choosing not to pass your genes on? I may be misremembering, I thought you said that a few years ago.

Sorry, the exclusive and inclusive "we" in English always troubles me.

No I owe it to future generations to give them the option of incoporating parts of my genetic attributes. The species could be doomed if deprived of my superior encoding.

My son turned 15 a couple weeks ago, I'm 35. He is very conservative in his dress, so I'm more likely to have to deal with the dudes at Brooks Bothers than Hot Topic.

For those with a concern that they won't mention, Shelgeyr and I do not plan to reproduce; my genes have been passed and his sensitive ponytail stops in this generation.

Good point, but I needed a name that people would know.

Well I'd be pretty scared if my 15 y.o. (if I had one) was shopping there were that the case. ;)

Imagine where you'd shelling out come Prom and Graduation.
