Its June. In Las Vegas. 105-110 is *not* "Excessive Heat"... Its NORMAL! The "Prolonged period of hot temperatures" goes by another name: Summer. Las Vegas Valley Excessive Heat Watch Statement as of 2:46 PM MDT on June 04, 2013 ... Excessive heat watch in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening below 4000 feet... The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued an excessive heat watch below 4000 feet for portions of southern Nevada... southeast California and northwest Arizona... which is in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening. * Expected temperatures: highs ranging 105 to 110 for much of the Mojave Desert region... including the Las Vegas Valley... 110 to 114 along the Colorado River valley and 119 to 123 degrees at furnace creek in Death Valley National Park. * Greatest impacts: an excessive heat watch means that a prolonged period of hot temperatures is expected. People most prone to heat related illnesses are Young children... the elderly... those with health conditions and anyone without easy access to air conditioning... including those participating in outdoor recreation. Precautionary/preparedness actions... Drink plenty of fluids... stay in an air-conditioned room... stay out of the sun... and check up on relatives and neighbors. |

Those parameters meet the National Weather Service's overall criteria for an excessive heat warning, regardless of how normal it might be for the area. Our* goals include protecting life and property, and those are definitely life-threatening conditions. If some damn fool (maybe an out-of-towner?) decides it's a good idea to go work outside for 12 hours, he's probably going to be admitted to the local ER for heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Education through watches and warnings disseminated through local media and personal electronic devices is an easy way to raise awareness in the public and prevent these kinds of issues. The infrastructure's already built out - why not use it? Does most people in Las Vegas really need to know that 115 degree temperatures can kill you? Probably not. Just like most people in Wisconsin don't need to know it's not a good idea to go outside when the wind chill is -60, or the people in Florida don't need to know that it's going to hail/lightning like armageddon for a half hour each afternoon in summer. But if the watch or warning saves one life, it's worth the minimal effort to push that information out. Besides, you'd be surprised how many people really do need to be educated about weather. There are still people who think it's a good idea to hide from a tornado under an overpass, that the skyscrapers along the beach will deflect a hurricane, or that it can't hurt to test the flood waters a little bit with their car. *Volunteer, not employee |

There are also a lot of tourists in Vegas that might need a clue or two... I know when I lived in Alaska, the locals had a saying about it.. 'Welcome to Alaska -- where stupid people go to die...' There were near daily stories about tourists, or other non-locals (visiting family, etc...) doing stupid things, like driving a rented snow machine onto a snow covered frozen lake in the spring or fall, never to be seen again... Or leaving the family pet outside, in a cage, or tied to a tree.. (Bear Candy!) Like Vlad said, having the occasional warning on TV/Radio, etc... might save a tourist from heat exhaustion (or worse). |

Man, that's **** hot. It's hitting 100 degrees down here, but 110 in June? Wow. That's almost as bad as Kuwait was. |

That's pretty normal. Sure, 110 may be normal, but it'll still kill you. Best to get the word out and make sure people are ready. Also, I heard somewhere that Vegas has a few tourists. |

Arathain Kelvar wrote: Also, I heard somewhere that Vegas has a few tourists. No clue on that one, I tend to avoid The Strip like I owe it money. And I will concede the point about warning the tourists that may not know better. That said... if you expect a nice and moderate climate in a desert... you may want to be checked for serious derp levels. |

In any region, there exists certain knowledge that is highly specialized and nuanced, but commonplace to the locals. To not know certain things seems derptastic to the locals, when in fact it is utterly unknown to outsiders. That it is hot in Las Vegas, so hot that it is dangerous to human beings, is not one such point of local knowledge. Within North America, the region around Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico is consistently portrayed in all forms of visual media as an inhospitable pit of sand and hot. Nothing green grows there. |

This. 100%. You've have to have lived under a particularly large rock to not know that Vegas + Summer = Stupid Hot. |
