Aka "Rodahn = broke, Androgel = cha-ching!" Due to my lovely bout with testicular cancer 10 years ago, I have low T. I was on Androgel for a while, but $300/month with insurance is, well, yeah. I was generously offered to split the cost, but still, ugh. And it doesn't help that apparently Androgel is a notorious patent troll and actually pays off cheaper competitors to not release their products to eliminate competition. Throw in the fact that testosterone is also considered a controlled substance, and no online without prescription or cheaper from other countries for you! Next person! |

That sucks. I thought they had injections for that? A relative had a thyroid problem and I think he ended up taking testosterone injections. |

Yes, the injections are cheaper, but by the time you factor in the hospital visit itself (+gas) and all the peripheral fees included, I'd probably end up paying about the same amount. |

There was a court decision this week that may reduce the prevalence of paying makers of generics not to make their products. |

Yeah, I read about that shortly after posting this thread actually -- one ray of hope that the market will open up. Disgusting and inexcusable that this situation even exists in the first place. |

Disgusting and inexcusable that this situation even exists in the first place. It used to be that a pharma company would release a medication and have market exclusivity during its patent life. This enabled the pharma company to recoup its R&D costs & pay for future development. Now, generic companies are jumping the gun and filing for the generic versions almost as soon as the medication hits the market, sometimes even launching at risk (they can be forced to pay triple damages if the patent is upheld and they are found to be infringing upon it). Rather than deal with a lengthy trial, or risk that a patent gets invalidated, the pharma companies end up settling under these pay-to-delay agreements. The generic company goes to market a little earlier than the patent runs out, often gets a nice payout, and the innovator company gets some RoI. Still, I hope some generics hit the market soon for you. |

And on top of it all, I come to find out that I can't just go back to my endocrinologist to get a new prescription. Nope -- gotta get re-established with a general practitioner, who in turn has to refer me to the endocrinologist, who in turn writes the prescription. So, I'll be paying a generalist, the endocrinologist, and the pharmacy bill just to get one pharmaceutical. |
