Post subject:  Moving on

This past Thursday was my last day at the job I've worked at for 15 years. I'm moving on to bigger and better things: a new higher paying job in a new town. This is a wonderful opportunity for me and my fledgling new family.

But I can't help feeling melancholy about it. It's a huge change, and change is always scary. On Monday, I'll start my new job, surrounded by strangers. I'm leaving behind my friends, who've been my entire social life for as long as I can remember. I'll be selling my house where I've lived for five years, and I'll be in a new town where I only know a handful of people. I feel so lost.

I'm sure things will work out, and I will be with my wonderful wife, who is the pillar upon which I can lean. But the feelings of fear and doubt won't go away.

Congratulations!

Conquering that feeling is the first step towards achieving everything you want, and it does get easier as you go on.

Nobody hands out brass rings. You have to grab hold tight and make it yours. It sounds like you are doing fine, just have faith in yourself and your ability to make it work.

Good luck Mook! Moving to a new place and a new situation can be quite unnerving, but having someone solid to move with (ie, your wife) makes it a lot better.

Believe in yourself man. We do, your bride does, and the new company that is paying you all those shiny new shekels sure does or they wouldn't have hired you.

Your old friends are always just a few keyboard clicks away, houses are not homes. Strangers are friends waiting to be met.

How far away are you moving?

Austin is supposed to be a pretty neat town. Lots to explore and experience. Whole bunches of young professionals. You have adventure to look forward to young man, and a great car to cruise around town to discover it all.

Look forward to it, find the new places you can have fun in, treat the Mrs. to some wonderful dinners in nice restaurants, go to shows, find stores to supply your hobbies,

From one of Austin's promo sites -

Austin is known as the Live Music Capital of the World®. We’re home to more than 250 music venues, and countless famous artists. Take a stroll down Second Street to the touted Austin City Limits, or along South Congress Avenue to the intimate Continental Club.

Summer in Austin brings plenty of free outdoor music concert series, such as Blues on the Green and Unplugged at the Grove. To cool off, visit the Austin Ice Cream Festival or take a dive into Barton Springs, a 68-degree swimming hole. And, as the sun goes down, watch millions of bats take flight from the Congress Avenue Bridge.

Regardless of whether you’re coming to experience Austin’s vibrant entertainment and culture, our tantalizing culinary delights, or outdoors, you’ll quickly discover Austin features its own unique soundtrack.

Mookhow, do not worry yourself silly about this. Go to work, do your job, rock it, and enjoy your new home.

I haven't been in Austin except assing through in 12 years or so, but back then it was awesome. As far as I know it still is.

Congrats! Austin's the one place in Texas that I can stand, and it's legitimately cool. I've got family there, too (Phe's dad and stepmum, and her stepsister and brother-in-law are in Waco), so maybe we can stop by sometime when we visit. :)

Austin's a fun town.

My boss moved from there, and said that after living in Austin, Asheville, NC and New Orleans, LA were the two other places he'd want to live, with similar cultures.

Great art and music scene, interesting cultural mix, unique people.

And really good BBQ.

The **** kind of car does Mook have that lets him get from Houston to Australia in two and a half hours? Then I noticed he said, "Austin."
