My dog cut herself today, a nasty inch long gash. I took her to the Vet ER and when they put her under to get stitches she had a seizure and stopped breathing on her own. They put her on a vent and let me back to say goodbye. I held her and petted her and cried for a half an hour and then she started to breath on her own. Gradually she fought back and woke up, screaming.
Horrible, horrible screaming.
They said it was anaesthia dementia or something. Then she started responding to my voice and my scent but her eyes wouldn't dilate, because her brain might have swelled during the seizure. After another fifteen minutes or so they sent me home and kept her for observation overnight. I didn't want to leave but my other dog was home alone so I did. They said they would call if anything changed but told me I could call them all night too. I want to, and find out if she can see, is responsive, etc. but I am scared.

Wow man that's heartbreaking. I hope she comes out of it over night :(

I worked up the nerve to call. She seems to respond to her name but her eyes still won't dilate and she can't walk yet. She peed in the cage and they are going to try feeding her soon.

Oh Hop! That sounds horribly traumatic for both of you!! I'm so glad she came back to life. We had a very similar experience with my son's first dog and we (the vet and I) were unable to revive her. That was 4 years ago and it still hurts. Sooo glad she's alive! Praying that she pulls through and heals.

Thanks all, she's home now. She can't get up or down stairs or walk very well and the sun makes her whine but I put her in bed and pulled the blinds and she's sleeping now.

Sounds like she's doing better at least. That's positive.

Does anyone have a good trick to get a dog to take pills? She still wont eat(even people food) or drink.

I have always had to shove dry pills inside a piece of hotdog or something, liquid pills I would pop and squirt over normal food.

Peanut butter has always worked for me.

American cheese worked for a long time with mine, but she recently figured that out and won't eat cheese anymore. Peanut butter never worked for my dog, but hot dogs work fine (for now). My vet says cream cheese works well.

A dab of peanut butter on a small piece of bread wrapped around the pill always worked for me.

If she won't eat, just take your fingers and set the pill in the very back of her tongue, as far back as you can get it.

Tried:
Cheese
Syrup
Salami
Hot dogs

Peanut butter finally did it. Thanks all.

She's been eating wet food by hand and is alert now.
