Background:
So, SLC started a comic con a year or two ago and it was pretty successful. The guy who created it is an extremely greedy SOB, so much so that he decided to create a second Comic Con every year and call it FanX (Fan Xperience). So, the last couple years there have been two comic cons.
A separate person created a con for the first time last year called FantasyCon in SLC, and it was awesome. Very nice vibe. A friend of mine who is a glass blower said he made more money his first day at FC than he did at Comic Con. Lots of local and awesome artists. And the dude who runs the two Comic cons has been trying to rub them out.
I've attended one of his comic cons after attending fantasy con last year. And I hated it. It had no soul. It was overcrowded (fire marshall even shut down new entries to the building) and the booths were packed in so tightly that it sucked for both vistors and the vendors.
I decided to never give money to the greedy ******* again.
Flash forward:
The new FanX is coming up in a couple weeks. They keep announcing special guests (the more tickets they sell, the more guests they announce, so the more tickets they can sell). My wife, for some reason, keeps looking at the roster as they are announced. We've pretty much sworn off the comic con, but she REALLY wants to meet certain celebrities (especially of the Dr. Who and Felicia Day persuasion). This was our latest conversation.
Mrs. Numbuk: "They are having some voice actors show up this year too." (she knows I am a fan of voice actors, moreso than most people we know)
Numbuk: "That's nice." ie: "I'm still not going."
Mrs. Numbuk: "One name is Jess Harnell..."
Numbuk: "Rock Sugar. Voice of one of the Warner bros. in Animaniacs. Cool." (but not enough to get me excited)
Mrs. Numbuk: "The voice of the other warner bros. from Animaniacs..."
Numbuk: "Rob Paulson? Also voice of Raphael from ninja turtles? And Pinky from Pinky and the Brain? Cool." (but not enough to get me excited)
Mrs. Numbuk: "Yep."
Numbuk: "That's fun. But honestly, the only thing that would truly make me seriously consider going and push me over the fence would be if Jim Cummings* were to attend."
Mrs. Numbuk: "That sounds familiar. Let me go back a couple pages.... Ah yep. Jim Cummings. He is going to be there too."
Numbuk: "DAMN IT!!!!!!!'
So, yes. I have a ticket for one day. And I just plan on going in and getting a photo op and signature (but I'll be along for the ride for photo op with Felicia Day as well). Damn you, you greedy comic con organizer.
* - Jim Cummings, if you're not aware, has done a ton of voices. His most famous are Darkwing Duck, Minsc from Baldur's Gate, Monterey Jack from Rescue Rangers, Winnie the Pooh (and Tigger too), as well a host of others. I've been a huge fan of the man for a very long time and have always wanted to meet him. He has always been at the top of my list of favorite voice actors.
