A USN Blue Angel pilot died today while practicing for an air show. I have a soft spot for this stunt team. (Go Navy!) First fatality since 2007.

And an AF Thunderbird crashed after a flyover of the AF Academy commencement. But that pilot safely ejected.

Bad day for the stunt flyers.

Edit: Navy Times is reporting it was Blue Angel 6, opposing solo. If Wiki has the current team names right, the pilot is a USMC Captain.

Amazingly, the crashed F-16 from the Thunderbirds landed intact after the pilot ejected.

That pilot will be drinking on that story for years.

All I can think, for some reason is "I wonder if the engine was still running?"

Also at Fort Hood (due to flooding):

5 dead from a flood related rollover.

They showed the exact spot on the news last night on East Range Road and I remember it from when I was there. Low-water crossings are unbelievably treacherous and with flooding this bad I would really like to know why everyone wasn't ordered in from the training areas.

Evidently the soldiers killed were part of 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment.

That was my battalion when I was at Fort hood. :(

At the time I was there it was part of the 4th Infantry Division and it went to Ft. Carson with 4th ID when they moved up there, so at first I thought it was a mistake. Evidently 3-16 FA was inactivated at Ft. Carson in December 2014 and re-activated shortly thereafter at Ft. hood under 1st Cavalry Division.

Yeah, I was really sad to hear that. I think it's up to 9 dead now. Such a shame.

They also had to "evacuate" 11 Green Berets when 2 got altitude sickness in a training exercise:
