So I just had my year end wrapup meeting where I found out what my raise is for this coming year. We were told the company norm for a fully meets on your review was 1%...

but 2 months ago when the managers were doing their round table discussions on who gets what and who gets a promotion, my boss requested that i fill out a form that justifies a promotion. Basically, you list the projects you've worked on and have to demonstrate that you're performing at the next level for some time before they'll promote you. She made sure I knew it was important to get it done and basically told me that i was the only one in the group being asked to fill this form out...which is a 100% guarentee that you're getting a promotion.

Anyway...so I walk in to my boss' office where he's going to tell me what my increase is. He goes through his spiel and then gets into the meat of the summary. I will paraphrase for simplicity...

"Well, up until 2 weeks ago, you had your promotion. There were 12 promotions in all of R&D (approximately 150 people). Two weeks ago, a memo came out from Corporate requiring all departments to cut the amount of promotions they were giving by 10%. We had to cut 2 people and unfortunately you were one of the two people."



I feel like total crap now....I just wish he hadn't even told me and just said, here's your 2% (they gave me more based on performance YAY!) and thanks for your work.

It's already reached apathy. If it hadn't, people would spearhead their own destiny and not sit and complain about settling for the security of a job and getting bent over occasionally (or more often, depending on how good of a deal you can negotiate).

I love Corporate America and private enterprise. Indeed, they make my life very happy. That said ...

Readd:

It sucks man, but you need to look at the silver lining and evaluate your stance relative to your employer. If they cut the total promotion eligibility to 9% of the R&D employee pool, then you're still in the top 10-11% of employees. Even if you did not get a promotion you did get a merit raise beyond the norm for added performance. This indicates that you're somewhere between asset level (top) and high desirability on the human resources chart. This speaks well of you. Without knowing much about your corporate structure, they only other reason not to promote you from what I can glean is that your boss wants to keep you.

My wife is going through something very similar. Due changes (People getting fired for failure to preform, ethics violations, and audit failures) She was pushed in the Job as interim region manager, While there she formally applied for the position. She had to pass assessment, Oral challenge assessment, audit assessment, and security practices challenge, they have yet to due the formal interview
Instead they keep trying to hire others for the job. 12 candidates to date of which only 4 have made through the first level out those 4 only 1 made it all the way, That one lasted 2 weeks and completely failed her first live audit and security site check.
The fun kickers to this is they were all under 25 all with less than 2 years banking experience 10 were female and 2 were male.
My wife did find out that they starting pay for the one they did try was 15k less then the managers that she was supposed to supervise.
Sadly my wife is very frustrated with these events. She has 20 years of banking experience, under her belt and holds several financial licenses. They always seem to Call on her to clean up other people's mess.
SO now she's back to being interim manager, in addition they want her to clean up a banking center that just had a major audit failure where the Manger, assistant manager, 3 tellers , and 2 personal bankers were fired for ethics and security violations.
The corporate world sucks.

And here I am getting ready to write the Christmas checks for my 3 employees.

about 2.5 years now, though half a year was for a company I wouldn't consider "corporate" since the site I worked at had minimal support and oversight from the corporate office.

In my experience, there is a significant difference between what I do now, where I am self employed and work on my terms, and what I did then, when I was slaving in a cube enduring whatever creepy passive aggressive crap the guy who clawed his way to middle management wanted to hand out that day.

Let me try.

Monte participates in many activities, but he limits his contributions to corporate America by making a lot of his own gear and tools. His entertainment is as much socializing with friends in theater and the SCA as it is watching movies or playing on the computer.

In America it is almost impossible these days to live anything other than a Ludditish or Amish existence and not in some way contribute to corporate America. When and wherever possible, Monte patronizes smaller business, especially hand-crafters and small food businesses.

He rarely sets foot in a Wal-whatever.

Is that the kind of response you are looking for Rafael?

Is that representative of your lifestyle Monte?

I'll just write this. He uses the internet, drivers a car, probably has a cell phone and plays WoW. Not exactly anti-corporate.

I'd say Monte's point was more along the lines of "Screw the American corporate office/work environment" than "Screw all of Corporate America", personally.
