Post subject:  well this is a crappy feeling

certainly not as bad as some of the news posted in this forum posted recently, but I got my own dose of crappy news today.

I'm on my off tour now, so I'm at home at my parent's place. Got a call in the morning from bosses' secretary asking to schedule a phone meeting sometime next week, I say sure no problem and make the appointment. About 3 in the afternoon I check my email before I was about to go upstairs and go for a run, and find an email from the HR rep imforming me I am temporarily laid off effective Feb. 1 for approximately 3 months. At least its only temporary...for now anyways.

Still in a bit of surprise / shock. I guess that's what savings accounts are for right? hehe

Sorry man! Did something go wrong on the job? Or just a shitty economy? Either way, super lame.

Start looking.

Several things can happen.

You find nothing

You find something.

If you don't find anything, you still used your time wisely and let people know you are available, should they have an opening you fit. It kept you busy and let you know what conditions are like out there. Hopefully, three months is only three months.

If you find something there are two basic possibilities. It is better than what you have now and it is worse than what you have now.

If you find something better than what you've got, and your old company calls you back you have no obligation to return to the company that laid you off, even temporarily. Be nice about it, but this new job came up while they weren't paying you and keeping you busy. Of course if they never call you back, thenew job is a wonderful thing.

If you find something not as good as what you've got now you can leave it if your old job calls you back, and if they don't - well its money while you are finding something else.

Sorry to hear it Elessar, but you're a skilled man, you will find something else.

That's a big sucky. Our company has been doing these "furlough" things, too, where they "temporarily" lay someone off for three months. Must be the latest HR thing. I've only heard of one of them (out of ten or twenty, maybe?) coming back, so far.

Good luck, man.

Good luck Elessar. How does that affect the trip to Japan?

Ya its a combo of shitty economy, airlines industry not being in the best of shape (yet again), and (so the company says) the region having a good couple winter road seasons which has a decent impact on our business.

*good advice*

Thank for you the advice :) I'm going to poke my head around to regional airlines and see whats out there. Not to many companies are hiring right now, and I'm at a bit of a disadvantage as I only have co-pilot time under my belt right now so there would be a few jobs out there available that I'm not qualified for, but like you said no harm in applying.

Ya we did this last year around April, but it was only for 2-3 pilots and it was because one of the airplanes was retired out of service so they didnt need those extra crews. Those people were brought back in about 6-8 weeks iirc. This round of temp. layoffs is much more severe. The latest number I've heard was 13 pilots in total, most of us from the cargo side of things. Theyre parking 3 cargo aircraft out of 8 so thats a pretty big number. Honestly, I'm 50/50 about it only lasting 3 months right now. Don't know what to expect.

Sorry to hear about your temporary lay-off. Hopefully it will all work out with either a new job or getting this one back in a few months. Either way, you still get to go to Japan....I am super duper jealous!! :)

You have a good skill set to lean on should things go south. Keep your eyes open. As for now, just enjoy the entra time off the best you can.
