Working nights sucks in that sometimes, inevitably, the cursed daywalkers who surround you make noise and wake you up. It finally happened to me in my house.

My next door neighbor decided to have an argument with her family while she sat on her patio smoking. Since my neighborhood is patio homes with no yards to speak of, she was only about 20 feet from my bedroom window. I never heard the other side of the argument, just my very loud, very German neighbor yell at her kids.

She sounded exactly like Frau FarBissina from the Austin Powers movies...

I slept like crap, but I couldn't help but laugh the whole time.

Been there done that.

The worst time to be a night shifter is on your day off. Damn body doesn't want to adjust to normal hours. I've been awake all night...family is sleeping.

Working nights is a beautiful thing...when you get the paycheck with the shift diff and the weekend diff on it.

I've given up on sleeping at "normal" times unless i'm on vacation. It's just too much to go back and forth, so I generally stick to the same 3-4 hour range of bedtime, even on my nights off. It's great for my sleep, but murder on the social life, especially with all my friends and family also having to juggle family lives as well.

Oh, and I hear ya, Kirra! My shift diff is 20%of my base pay. Makes a huge difference!

I prefer working nights over afternoons. I work 2pm-10pm M-F, which works out good for school. For everything else, it's a pain in the butt. Regardless of what shift I work on, my sleep schedule involves staying up about six hours after I get out of work, then waking up and going straight to work. So even on second shift, I get home at 10pm and stay up until 4am, then get up at noon for work. The only waking hours I have are after 10pm, when businesses are closed. It's a pain having my schedule, but it is what it is. I just can't go to sleep right after I get home from work. The shift differential is nice though.

weekend diff? Shift diff? what are these things of which you speak?

I know what they are, but we do not get paid that; even though I lose my saturday night gaming festivities.

When I work contingent, midnights I make $38/hr...but that is no vacation or insurance. At my full time job I make $24.87, $2.30 midnight shift diff, $2.00 weekend shift diff, $1.00 charge nurse, and .75 for professional development ladder (which you can get by filling out paperwork and remaining up-to-date on continuing education)

Ironically, I work the hardest at the lesser paying job. I work 12.5 hours and rarely get a break, and it can be back breaking turning your patients and boosting Q2 when they are 300+ lbs. But I love only having 2 patients and being able to give the care that I want to because I have the time.

Midnights is worth it, if you can find a way to channel your inner vampire.
