So I just had my performance evaluation. Its kind. Of strange...I'll be honest, I thought my performance in the latter half of the year was absolutely horrible. And by that I mean not getting anything done for weeks, etc. When I was looking for a house I spent most of the day looking at houses online, researching, etc. The first half of the year I think my performance was top notch. I think I played a pretty big part in our program meeting a major customer milestone. But my performance the 2nd half was so bad that I seriously thought I was going to get a "shape up or ship out" type review.

Instead it was entirely positive. I didn't get Exceeds Expectations or anything like that, but was told I was doing a great job and to keep up the good work. I resisted the urge to say he was nuts and that I did an awful job, but that urge was there. Just to get it out in the open.

Managing your perception is a big part of life. Apparently you're better at that than you think, or you're just downplaying yourself in your own mind for some reason.

Either way, congrats on a good eval. We basically can't get "Exceeds" in my position, just "Meets or Exceeds," which is kind of a borked system if you ask me.

I've had reviews like that. And maybe I'm old school, but I lose respect for my management when they don't call me on my deficiencies.

There seems to be a conventional wisdom in management these days to only excentuation the positive, and forget about eliminating the negative.
