I couldn't find my refund on Where's My Refund? so I decided to call the IRS up and ask. After 10 minutes of holding a gentleman came on, got my information and placed me on hold again to check my status. 5 minutes elapse and he confirms the amount and the date it will be sent back.

He was courteous, empathetic and all around polite. Kudos to the IRS Customer Service. I can't imagine how those poor people do that job day-in-day out with the abuse they must take from every crackpot who views them as their sole outlet for venting frustration at government spending. I am sure they get calls "Stop wasting my **** money assholes!" a lot. Not to mention whackjobs trying to crash planes into their buildings.

Whatever it was, it was not customer service. You are not their customer.

Whatever you want to call it, I had a pretty good experience with their phone support folks a couple years ago. The reason I had for calling them was infuriating and beyond stupid but the person on the line was pretty good...

I think it's great you had a good experience Hopwin.

He most certainly is. It's people that think they are not and attempt to spread hate and discontent that gives government workers a bad name. Despite what some people's thoughts might be on the subject, government workers are just like everyone else, going about doing their jobs to the best of their abilities and striving to make things better, only they have to put up with a$$holes that want to demean them every chance they get.

Care to get off the soap box now?

No. You are not their customer, regardless of what kind of mushy feelings you might have for the great big government love-in. Being a customer implies a choice of services in the private sector.

What you are is a citizen. Whether you have a positive or negative feeling about it, that is what you are in relation to your government.

At least soon there will be another 16,000 IRS workers, as part of the recent health care bill...

Really though Rynar I think it's just an argument of semantics w/ the word "customer"

Is your soapbox any better than his? I mean, we can sit here and ***** about what the word "customer" means to everyone but obviously that would be a waste of time, and nobody wants to do that, right?

Oh wait, Hellfire exists.

OHH snap!

I made a benign, and accurate comment that was quite applicable to the topic of the OP. Then I have to deal with being called an ******* for stating a fact.

There is a part of that exchange that belongs in hellfire, but it didn't come from me.

Spoiler:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customer

Quote:
A customer, also called client, buyer, or purchaser, is usually used to refer to a current or potential buyer or user of the products of an individual or organization, called the supplier, seller, or vendor. This is typically through purchasing or renting goods or services. However, in certain contexts, the term customer also includes by extension anyone who uses or experiences the services of another. A customer may also be a viewer of the product or service that is being sold despite deciding to not buy them.

The word derives from "custom," meaning "habit"; a customer was someone who frequented a particular shop, who made it a habit to purchase goods of the sort the shop sold there rather than elsewhere, and with whom the shopkeeper had to maintain a relationship to keep his or her "custom," meaning expected purchases in the future.

The slogans "the customer is king" or "the customer is god" or "the customer is always right" indicate the importance of customers to businesses - although the last expression is sometimes used ironically.

However, "customer" also has a more generalised meaning as in customer service and a less commercialised meaning in not-for-profit areas. To avoid unwanted implications in some areas such as government services, community services, and education, the term "customer" is sometimes substituted by words such as "constituent" or "stakeholder". This is done to address concerns that the word "customer" implies a narrowly commercial relationship involving the purchase of products and services. However, some managers in this environment, in which the emphasis is on being helpful to the people one is dealing with rather than on commercial sales, comfortably use the word "customer" to both internal and external customers.

Soapbox?

He called a hotline that provided a service.

He is a person designed to use that hotline (service), thus he is the customer. He received prompt, helpful assistance. That is cutomer service.

You brought in comments to belittle the government and specifically the person who did their job (and did it well) to imply that government workers are not worthy of the respect of receiving complements for doing their job.

Your wiki means nothing. If you worked in the government you would be exposed to the training and documents which specificly state that the interaction with the people that receive services are labled customers and customer service is a critical part of our evaluation process. You semantics should not apply to saying it's OK to crap on anyone that fits into a category.

It me saying your comments are the comments from someone who cares not about respecting others. Where i come from we call them assholes, but you are right, it probably does not belong here.

One citizen talking to another, one provides a service that the other is requesting.

I'm OK with the service provider adopting a "customer service" attitude... after all, "the customer is always right".

I'm fine with being treated like a customer. Infact, it's preferential. That doesn't mean I am a customer, however. Some people enjoy LARPing, but it doesn't make any of them **** elves.

I guess it is about the interpretation. He received received customer service, but it's not customer service. Seems like a very confusing way to do things.

It seemed like another attack on "evil government workers". If it wasn't, my apologies.

And it has nothing about the "big emo" it has to do with people keeping their jobs. It has to do with working hard every, doing your best to help people and getting recognition.

A customer is someone who pays money (taxes) and recieves services (roads, police, education, etc). Citizens of this country do both, though not always in equal and balanced measure.

Being a customer implies consumership. The presence of a voluntary exchange in the private sector.

It is the reason we have separate words for the other thing that don't mean customer. Words like citizen, stakeholder, constituent, or taxpayer.

The word customer and the other words are not synonymous, which means they have different meanings. Which means they are different things.

Believe me, I much prefer it when my government treats me like a customer, it is much nicer than the alternative, but being treated as something doesn't validate that into reality somehow. I had a friend in high school who used to drive his beat up Ford Tempo like a race car, but it sure as **** wasn't one.
