Post subject:  Diabeetus Part two

Just had my 3 month follow up. The results were mixed.

My ACL has gone down from almost 12 (11.9) to just below 7 (6.9)
My cholesterol is sitting at a place that would be at the high end of normal if I did not have diabetes, but since I do... it is bad. I am on some medicine that starts with an L for that.
The doctor has recommended taking an aspirin a day, to help reduce the risk of heart attack, along with the cholesterol meds.
My blood pressure is perfect.
I have no signs of weaking liver or any other symptom associated with the meds I am on.
I have no signs of any deficiencies, and my potassium levels are good. (The cholesterol meds have a side effect of causing leg cramps.. so it is a good thing I take a daily potassium pill.)

I have another follow up in 4 months: Blood work and all, to check my levels again and to do a full panel to make sure the meds are not killing my liver or heart.

I also have a doctor requirement to go get my eyes checked. He said that is always recommended, but as a diabetic, it is no longer an optional course of action.

I am optimistic in this, I dropped my ACL to acceptable levels in three months, and I feel that now, I will be able to modify my diet slightly and take care of the cholesterol levels as well. One ailment at a time. :) But gorram, I will get this all taken care of. /flex

Good attitude, DS! Keep up the good work! Sounds like you're on Lipitor...

Congratulations DS, most diabetics don't have the moxie or willpower to do what you have done in the last three months. I am impressed.

Keep up the good work, the life you are saving is your own.

Nice turnaround on the A1C! (I assume that's what you meant :) )

Make sure when you make your eye appointment that you tell them you are wanting to be checked for diabetes symptoms (primarily Macular Degeneration ) along with the regular stuff.

I think that you'll probably find that your vision will generally be better with the diabetes under control. Blood sugar affects the lenses of the eye, and if you have large swings, you may notice your vision (eyeglass prescription) changing with it.

As far as the preventative meds stuff, it sounds like your Dr. and my Dr. went to the same school. My blood pressure was 'normal', but he still wanted me a small dosage to reduce the effect of the high glucose levels. Mine also has me chewing on a baby aspirin every day.

Don't lose sight of the main goal. To get off of the diabetes meds altogether. This is doable (I'm living proof). If you don't have to take the meds, you don't have to worry about their effects on your heart, kidneys or liver. Not to mention that the dietary changes necessary to get you off the meds are probably much healthier for you (and your internal organs) than the stuff you were eating that got you there. :)

Good luck, and keep swingin' for the fences!

Excellent DS!! Very good job getting the A1C down! The eye exam is a diabetic retinal scan...I just had mine last month.

I have made it point to walk around my work building (not just my cube) a few times a night.

I just read the prescription again... Lovastatin (I would assume the generic version)

DS, my cardiologist suggests 30 to 40 minute a day walks, every day! I can't always fit a walk in the park into my schedule, but walking briskly through the house and around the yard while doing chores works too. Also dont forget to stretch and do some weights...even if its a couple of large canned food items from the pantry that you are lifting!

Also keep an eye on any side effects from the drugs you are taking! If it's serious enough to disrupt your life you need to get off that drug and find something else! Believe me, I know!
