My cat is driving me bananas. 90% of the time she is sweet and adorable and playful. She even does annoying things that I can tolerate because it is normal cat behavior, like peeing on the beds or anything soft when her litter box is full.... But one thing I cannot stand is the incessant howling, whining, crying, and yelling she does when she wants to go outside. We live in the ghetto, we have no yard, and every week there is some smashed and bloody remains of some cat or possum or squirrel in the road. She lies in wait by the door and tries to dash out as soon as you open it. If you do not let her outside, she commences the tantrums which can last for up to a half an hour and then pick back up again when she thinks about going outside. We have given in and let her out about 3 or 4 times, and she has 'escaped' about that many times as well, and I have been nervous as heck each time....but the last time I saw a bloody, flattened feline corpse in the middle of the road a block from our house (and Nitefox and I had just seen that cat a week before and commented on how cute it was) I decided no way am I letting the cat out anymore. I'm going nuts. |

Have you tried squirting the cat with a water bottle whenever it goes near the door? It takes time but eventually it worked on the 17,000 cats that my ex left with me before I placed them. |

Hahahahahahaha! I like the way you worded that, Hop. No, I have not tried that yet. I had a squirt bottle somewhere but have no idea where it got off to. Maybe I'll get another one and try that. SG--That looks like interesting stuff...maybe she is really bored. I see her batting around gum wrappers and climbing in and out of windows and stuff...maybe she needs some more toys and more playtime. Thanks guys. |

I prefer natures solution to stray cats. We had a sizable colony of cats around here, about 6 months ago 2 harris hawks took up residence down the street, then about 3 months ago a big barn owl has been making the rounds. I'm seeing fewer cats around lately. There also have been the occasional signs posted for missing small pets. Better than the coyote pack we had a few years ago, not as noisy |

Thankfully, I picked a house on a quiet street so I can let my cat out. Amdee spoiled him rotten in that regard (she worked at home, so he could just wander over to the door whenever he pleased and she'd let him out, and hear him meowing at the door to be let back in). Fortunately, he's deigned to compromise, where I let him out after I get home from work, and he prowls around, and I check the porch in an hour or so because the house is bigger and I can't always hear him if he meows. He still drives me bonkers occasionally, but that's usually because he just wants attention while I'm on the computer, and can't be trusted to stay off the keyboard if I let him up into my lap. |

My cat used to do the same and at the time, like you, I lived in the ghetto. Escaping was not an option if I wanted to keep my cat safe. I'm fortunate now that my wife and I own a home with an 8 ft. high stucco wall around the back yard. I can let her out there and unless she jumps on the garbage can, she's fine out there for hours. ~Tolyn~ |

Our cats stay indoors, there are coyotes in the neighborhood. One cat is declawed and the other is too fat to run. Hey Tolyn, remember when Mao didn't have his own gravity well? |

When I lived next door, we had an all dark gray cat named Spot. She liked to get out of the house from time to time and every god damned time she came back, she was pregnant. We didn't much like her to begin with, so the last time she did it, we let the kittens get old enough to where they could fend for themselves, drove her and the kittens out to the dairies and dropped them off in a corn field. I hated that cat so god damned much. |
