So....I go to this message board for preggo moms expecting in February. One of the moms just posted this:

Warning: Stranger TMI:
Spoiler:
Quote:
well, for the past few days I thought I had a yeast infection, but Saturday I woke up with bumps all over my va jay jay and yesterday I went to the emergency room because of the pain. They did 2 swabs. One for yeast and the other for herpes. Fortunately the yeast was negative, but I can't say the same for the other one. From what Ive read the first rash appears 2 to 3 weeks after contracting the virus. The doctor asked me who I had physical contact with lately that was new. I'm like well...... I'm a massage therapist. I rub people all day every day. So, apparently I missed a small opening and contracted herpes. I'm so very tore up and in so much pain I just don't know what to do anymore. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers and hope that the little one stays safe in there!

Um...unless she was having sex with her clients, isn't there like absolutely no chance of her getting herpes from giving someone a normal massage? I didn't think that rubbing someone's back could result in contracting herpes. All the women are feeling sorry for her, and saying "omg you can contract herpes through a massage??"
Please. She doesn't deserve sympathy. She's pregnant and obviously engaging in sexual activity with random strangers for money. And now we are all feeling sorry for her? No way.

Didn't read the TMI, however, I suggest you read up on the transmission of Herpes -- It can be passed simply skin-to-skin contact particularly if someone has a lesion or open sore or microcut on the skin. I don't deny your theory is plausible, but don't be too quick to assume the worst.

I did read up on the transmission of herpes....even the CDC lists it as an STD and shows that contact with genitalia or bodily fluids to be the only known form of transmission.
I cannot possibly think of a scenario in which she was innocently and appropriately giving someone a massage and contracting herpes.

Hmmmm...regardless of how she got it, it could still be bad news for the baby, yeah? That's pretty **** up, especially if she was sleeping around and got them that way. Shouldn't that be like, illegal or something? I mean, not the prostitution(which already is illegal in most states), but the endangerment of the unborn child thing. There's always a c-section to avoid running the child through the herpes, I suppose, but I have to imagine it's still not safe even while the child is in the womb. What the mother ****, man?

According to what I've read, a new infection is most dangerous for the fetus if the mother contracts herpes in the last trimester....if its in the last trimester, it could be fatal for the baby.
We are all in our first trimester in our Due Date Club so her baby has that going for it. With a C-section, hopefully the baby should be ok but there are always risks.
My best guess is that either she is lying and "not so professional" with her massage therapy, or she got it from a sexual partner and thinks that she would be more accepted if she could say she got it unknowingly from a job hazard.
Either way, she's either lying to everyone else or lying to herself.
I just came here to rant about it because I can't rant about it there.

I'm clinging onto that 2% of hope that one of our health professionals on the board will come and explain in scientific terms how a full body massage without genital contact could transmit herpes....

Maybe she's lying about being a massage therapist...she is really a wanton actuary.

Give the woman a break... she didn't get it from a massage, but do you really think prostitution is the only possible way to get herpes? Most people with STIs get it from a partner they believed to be monogamous who wasn't, or a partner who didn't know or disclose their status.

Regarding the herpes virus, from herpes.org:
. Q. I live in a non-sexual relationship with someone who has herpes. Am I at risk of catching herpes from the swimming pool - hot tub - toilet seat - shared towel - etc?
A. This chance of contracting a herpes infection when living in a non-sexual relationship with a person with genital herpes (or oral herpes for that matter) is vanishingly small. The herpes virus has to actually enter the body of another person through a broken area of the skin. The virus will not enter through intact skin. So, touching the blister fluid from a herpes infection with the tip of a finger would not transmit the infection directly to the finger, for example. On the other hand, if the finger that had touched the blister fluid was then used to scratch an itch on the eyelid before being washed with soap and water, for example, the infection could, in fact, be transmitted to the eyelid, and possibly into the eye, if the person scratched hard enough to create a tiny, microscopic tear in the skin.

The chlorine that is in pools, hot tubs, and shower water kills virus. Soap of course instantly kills virus. One can find occasional reports of people who claim that they have contracted herpes from a hot tub. But, such a case must be extremely rare. Cases of facial herpes have been reported to have been transmitted during rugby playing, presumably because of an infected player transmitting it to other players.

The infected person should be encouraged to use good sense and to not place others at risk when symptoms are obvious. Infected persons should understand their responsibility to clean infected areas on their bodies well with soap and water and to refrain from contacting common household areas with the infected part of their bodies when active infection is present. At a time when they have an active infection on the genitalia, if they were to sit on a toilet seat that is used by others, it would be common courtesy to clean the toilet seat after use with either alcohol or soap and water on a clean cloth and then set the cloth aside to be laundered in a hot wash.

Sounds to me like it's distantly possible for a massage therapist practicing very poor hygiene to pick it up (open sore on upper thighs) and infect herself (bathroom without washing her hands first). Sounds pretty remote to me. Google 'nonsexual transmission of herpes' for some reading material, but do it from home or people will start following you around with sanitizer spray.

Sounds to me like this person needs to find a new vocation, as I doubt if she were to inform her clients that she now has herpes, they would continue to request her services of massage.

If that's the case, she deserves the herpes. But the child does not deserve to have its life put in danger like that.

Yes. This is called vertical transmission.
