please tell me before hand your just graduated son downloaded nearly a thousand pics of his girlfriend in various stages of undress. I'm pretty sure the girl there with 2 fingers stuffed in her nether regions wasn't 18 at the time.

/wipe hard drive

I'm not even going to put an ethernet cable or my flash drive near that prison maker.

Sorry about your other legit pics...almost. I'm not looking through them.

I really doubt that the person bringing you the machine new that their son had nudie pics.

I got a lot of that when people would bring in their phones (with cameras) to be worked on.

I can't think of a single instance in which someone asked me to work on their personal computer that required me to go through (as in opening) their personal files and/or photographs.

I had a client once who kept taking his work laptop home and it kept getting infected.
Finally, I downloaded some file from the UK which exported all his cookies into a readable thingy, printed it all out and gave it to him, highlighting all the unsafe and porn sites....informing him that it was university property.
He swore up and down that it was his teenage daughter.
(Most of the sights were lesbian porn...either he was lying or he has bigger probs at home, lol)
Either way, I just started wiping his laptop everytime it came in re-infected.

When I work on someone's computer I try to locate their personal movies, pics, etc so that I can back them up to my external drive in case I need to wipe it. I don't open the files but XP has that nifty *sarcasm* feature that shows you thumbnails of videos and images. Then lucky day when I find them I 000 out my external drive in case it's anything that might be legally/morally reprehensible.

Ditto on the back up thing. In fact in most places that do it for fees its part of a required process.

I learned the hard way the first time I helped someone out with their computer. The damn thing was over-run with trojans, spyware, mal-ware, you name it. I could've spent two weeks untangling it with individual programs to remove each instance but I figured, what the heck, I'll wipe and do a clean install, it'll run faster, etc, etc. When that person got it back they were pissed, chewed me out up and down ***** about how they should've taken it to a pro. Sorry for the favor mate, next time go spend the $300 to get that mess untangled.

If I determine the computer needs a wipe, I give it back and tell them they need to back up their personal files. I don't mess with it, and don't want to be responsible for losing their data.

As for the preview feature in XP, I change that to details.

I remember having to work on a friend's PC at one time. I didn't know he was gay (he came out later... it was... awkward. But I digress.) So I boot the thing up, and what greets me as his wallpaper?

A big muscley dude in boots, chaps, and a cowboy hat. Said cowboy was visibly excited.

It was a bit disturbing to my fragile little mind at the time.

I took my machine in to the shop once and the clerk told me to take it back to the car as they weren't taking any machines today. I said something like "must be nice to be that busy", he replied "we're not. Some #$%^&* brought in a computer that wasn't running, we opened it and the damn thing was full of cockroaches, we're getting fumigated tomorrow, try back in a few days."

I went somewhere else.

This happened to be a case of a lady I know who got a bunch of malware crippling the thing so it would hardly run. It needed a complete wipe, but she asked me to try to save copies of pictures of her mother that passed away this spring.

Most machines I look at have some sort of porn on them, and just overlook all of it. I just wasn't willing to search through thousands of pics of underage girls to find what she needed.

A lot of that underage crap could've been from malware.

Dude, you could have warned me before I had been asked to work on his computer. It was one thing thinking I was the only one who found out he was into gay cowboys; but to know you gave me no warning... that just ain't right.
