Post subject:  Phone Harassment by nobody??

I have received 10 calls today on my cell from "Private Call" and no one answers. If I stay on the line, the call ends in about 10 seconds. I don't hear anything. Two of those calls as soon as it ended the phone rang again, "Private Call."

What the heck. This is really annoying. How do I stop it? It's not like I can report it if there's no number, can I?

I never answer the phone unless it is a number I recognize. In other words, if you aren't in my contacts list, I don't answer the phone. If they really need to get ahold of me, they can leave a voice mail.

I had a bunch of these in the weeks before our primary elections, but they didn't say "Private Call", just a couple different 3 number codes...I think it was an area code. It's stopped, though

Unless I recognize your number, I'm not answering.

If you don't leave me a message the first time, you get blocked. And I don't block you to VM, I block you with a quick answer and hang up.

<3 GBlocker.

Sounds like an autodialer malfunctioning.

I don't answer numbers I don't recognize, either. I despise the telephone. I also would never leave someone a message except in very specific circumstances, because I hate voicemail more than I hate the telephone. I check my own voicemail about once a week, if that, and the only times I'd leave one is if I felt obligated to call someone but really didn't want to speak to them (then leaving the message relieves me of said obligation and as a bonus I still didn't have to speak to them.)

Not answering the phone isn't really a solution, though. 10 calls a day is invasive even if you don't answer.

I used to turn the ringer completely off of my phone, and only used it when *I* wanted to make a call. LOL

And caller groups means you can make some calls ring and anything else silent.

Seems handy though I'll admit it's not something I've ever been aware of. I've had months where I've literally seen on the bill that I've used less then 30 minutes. Just don't use phones a lot. LOL

Thanks though, I'll have to look at that.

They didn't call today at all so I'm guessing it was a fluke like Taamar suggested.

Ok...I'm officially going nuts.

For the past few days, this person/auto-dialer/whatever calls between 10-16 times a day! Sometimes its spaced out to once an hour or so, and other times I get 3 or 4 calls back to back...I hit the ignore button and they call right back.

I called my phone company and they said they can't do anything about it and have no way of finding out a blocked number.
They said the only thing I can do is have my number changed. WTF. I'm seriously in full-preggo-hormone-irratated-wanna slap the heck outta somebody mode!

I can't file charges because there is no way to find out who is calling.

If you ever want to bug the crap out of somebody, have your number blocked and call someone 15 times a day for a week.

I don't believe that for a second. I think the person you were on the phone with was just trying to get rid of you. I would call back and ask to speak to a manager. Keep climbing until you get to someone who has a clue. I'd threaten legal action if necessary to get their attention.

We really don't. If your telco isn't sent the originating ANI or is sent only "Blocked" or "Restricted" there's really no way for them to track down the originating number.

Threatening legal action will get you pretty much nowhere with the majority of Telcos.

Call your phone company and request that they block restricted caller ID calls.

Yeah, thats pretty much what I told her, but she kept denying it and I have 3 kids at home though and was on the verge of yelling and tears....I have to wait until they leave. I did tell her I was skeptical that they, being the provider of my phone service, had no way of finding out who was calling me. I also told her that phone records are subpeonaed all the time so there was obviously a way for them to find out who was calling, but she said they couldn't.

Oooooo I'm so angry!!

They "can't do that" either. All they can do is offer to change my number...which is more hassle than getting 15 phone calls a day from a blocked number.

Yes. Phone records *are* subpoenaed all the time. But if the Originating CLID/ANI is blocked or restricted, there really is no way to determine where the call is coming from. Heck, I could set up a soft phone here at my desk and feed it the ANI 999-999-9999 and make calls to you all night long if I wanted to. and there really wouldn't be a damn thing the telco could do about it. (Not that I'd do such a thing, because it would be wrong, but still.)

In essence the call records wound show:
9999999999 --> 55ladykate 08:39:45 9/10/10

Now *that* I call bullshit on. It should be a simple process to block calls that do not present a caller ID to a terminating number.

If it *really* gets to be a problem, I suggest into porting your number to a vonage/voip type system. ;) But that's just me :)

Your logic is not helping, Arafys. I'm already aware that nobody can do **** about this, I don't need they "why they can't do this" defined for me, what I really need is either a solution to the problem or someone to yell at and cry on until I'm not frustrated anymore.

She said they can only block calls by specific numbers and *I* do not know the number, then *I* cannot have it blocked and *they* cannot find out the number.

Most telcos *should* offer this service.

And I'm *trying* to provide you solutions. Also trying to prevent you from wasting your time yelling at the poor telco people. I work in telecom, I *know* we're frustrating people to deal with. The movies and such have led people to believe that we can do *far* more than we actually can.

/hugs Kate.

I know it sucks, I get that. But there *should* be options available to you on this.

Oh I don't yell at telco people. I don't yell at any customer service people....I spent over a decade working customer service and spent my time doing technical support by phone....I'm obviously angry but not rude or yelling...always polite.

*sigh* Thanks, bro. :(

Try the *77 code on your phone. It may work.

If you don't mind me asking, who's your telco? Maybe I can do a bit of research.
