... died a couple of days ago, less than a week before Gran Turismo 5.

****.

Edit,
For the sake of transparency, it's likely my fault. A few weeks ago I upgraded the HDD of my PS3. Two days ago, I put my old drive back in and copied all of my save games etc to a usb stick to transfer. Put the new drive back in and now my PS3 won't turn on anymore. It gets stuck with a blinking red light, no video or audio output at all. Can't even boot into safe mode. I tried putting the original drive back in to see if something had happened to the new one, but it won't even boot with the HDD that I just had in it 5 minutes before!

I have no idea what could have happened.

Console is out of warranty, so it's either shell out $30 for a guide to fix myself, $150 sending to Sony, or $299 for a new one.

Sigh.

Your XBox felt disgraced by having FIFA played on it, so it lashed out.

But they aren't even in the same cabinet!

I lament FIFA being played on my Xbox as well, but my room mate just got a RRoD for the second time.

I'll trade your PS3 for my 60" TV that decided to color shift yellow just out of warranty...

If you are okay with DLP's, replacing a 60" isn't too bad of a dent on the wallet :p

That's . . . odd. I've honestly never heard of that happening before.

Is it a phat PS3 or a Slim?

If it's a phat, I'd say cut your losses and get a new Slim. As far as I know, once the warranty goes, the parent company won't do anything to it regardless (unless this has changed), and especially for a discontinued model.

It's a fat 80gb with BC from the Metal Gear 4 bundle.

The only thing I can think of is the system getting shocked somehow, but even that seems unlikely. I don't have a single square foot of carpet in my house and I'm pretty careful about... discharging... any time I open something up.

I would be okay with not owning a PS3, but Little Big Planet 2 + my gf mandates I fix this soon.
